Re: Can't seem to play fast

Bill Bachman literally writes the book on hand technique. If I were you I'd listen to him.

Re: 40th Anniversary of Physical Graffiti - How Cool Is This?

I like this a lot. What I like about it as much as anything is the honesty of the capture. It's 'just' a camera mic, a camera and a bunch of kids playing some great music in an interesting and...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

No - most of them wear a stage persona on their sleeve. There's nothing wrong with that. Maybe there are exceptions but it's an entertainment industry. That's the end of it. If people don't enjoy...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

'Spectacle for cash'?

Isn't that about 90% of the entertainment industry? What about Bowie's 'Thin White Duke', 'Ziggy Stardust'? Gary Numan's 'Android' persona? Elton John's career? Prince? ...

Re: drum fill friday

4/5, didn't get the Opeth one. The last one I knew, as was the HH one. The others were educated guesses.

Re: I accept defeat.

There are all kinds of alternative placements but experimenting with placements is key to a minimal approach. It's good fun!

Re: I accept defeat.

That's the thing matey. You're reading condecension where none exists. I've said in plenty of other threads that the best solution is the most appropriate solution in that circumstance - there's no...

Re: I accept defeat.

I do it for the sake of simplicity. I don't want to be dealing with ten microphones, extended line check, extended sound check, limiters, gates, etc. Sure it's much easier than it used to be...

Re: Rock albums with modern production and a great vintage drum sound

Fourth mention in two days. Radiohead' 'In Rainbows' has old-fashioned sounding acoustic drums.

Re: S****y albums done by great bands..

'Love Beach' by ELP. I hate ELP but 'Love Beach' really takes the biscuit.

I don't like 'Pablo Honey' by Radiohead. I really don't. It's not a terrible album but I just can't listen to it.

Re: Odd time signature songs for beginners

'Fifteen Step' by Radiohead is a good one, in 5/4. 'Money' by Pink Floyd has probably been mentioned - 7/4 with changes to 4/4. Good fun.

Oh! 'Reckoner' by Radiohead. That's a great little breezy number.

Re: Adults Learning Drums

Sure but you'd also have a generation of functionally illiterate adults twenty years later. I work with a lot of functionally illiterate people and it's no picnic for them.

Re: Brand Loyalty

Quoted for truth. We have brands we prefer but I don't think loyalty is really necessary.

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

No particular fan of The Eagles but I've got to say, if you're going to do it, do it like Don Henley.

Re: Brand Loyalty

I tend not to feel loyal to corporate entities because they sure as Hell aren't going to be loyal to you.

If you feel more at home on certain kits, that's fine. I see no issue there - as long as...

Re: So how's this for bitter?

Fair enough.

The reason I posted what I did in this thread is my 'solution' to the issue of ideological recording hobbyists, which is part of what Bo posted first off. That's my justification!

Re: So how's this for bitter?

I've recorded drums a fair bit. I've done my share of live sound too. I've never felt ideological about any of these principles and I don't understand why other people do. Surely it should be the...

Re: How do you record an Electric Drum Kit?

A couple of things.

First of all, they're not called 'VST', they're called software instruments. VST is one format of software instruments, AU is another and there used to be DirectX instruments...

Re: How do you record an Electric Drum Kit?

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigmidi2/

This assumes you can get virtual instruments on iOS, on Garageband or the like.

MIDI is data. Electric drumkits can output MIDI data, input them...

Re: OCD or normal jacking around?

It's not OCD. OCD is an anxiety disorder characterised by feelings of extreme danger to yourself others if things aren't 'just so'.

It's being picky. That's entirely different.

Re: end of guitar centre?

Given Guitar Center's massive debt to Fender at the moment and Fender making noises about opening their own retail outlets, I smell a takeover. Fender may as well take over Guitar Center and recoup...
