Re: What performance defines drummers as musicians for you?

LOL

Sorry, wrong link! I couldn't work out why Andy would have thought Becky was in that video haha

James Taylor live with Steve Gadd on drums with that incredible passage at the end of the...

Re: What performance defines drummers as musicians for you?

James Gadson is a god :)

Steve Gadd is almost always incredibly musical. I've posted this before but SG's performance here is a standout - the bass drum on the upbeat at the end of the bridge is...

Re: Endings

I really like snappy, structured endings and also a little variation rather than the big drawn out ta-daaaa every time.

When it comes to final stings - the very last big note - it seems to me...

Re: I'm a jaded music industry guy

If you squint or close your eyes then you can't see the Peal logos :)

Listening to percussion jams tends to bore me, even with monster playing like this. Great idea, though. I thought it worked...

Re: Less Playing = More Kudos

Heh, I'd pay to see Kwon Soon Keun too - especially in an intimate club. Not just a legend but an inspiration :)

When people overplay I take it to mean that either they are in the wrong band and...

Re: New Guru!

After all, they're cheaper than DWs!

Really, I don't deserve a kit like Gurus or any other top line kit. A lazy tuner with cloth ears who uses gaffa tape to cover for her sins and who gave up...

Re: Timing test

1,218 while clicking the mouse with my left little toe and drinking a cup of tea.

I put it down to all the hard work I did in the off-season. I'd like to thank my family and god and my coaching...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

This article Couldn't have happened in the late 60s and early 70s when record companies were falling over themselves to hire original bands with new ideas.

It's a shrunken live music scene, with...

Re: Best Jazz Songs

Interesting thread with lots of good info from actual jazz players.

As a rock drummer with much jazz influence (and bugger all facility :) I found Joe Jackson's Jumpin Jive - which is in a...

Re: Ian Paice rocks!!!

Hehe, well, Ian's been a monster now for a good 40 years or so :)

Funny that's he not more recognised. Ditto Aynsley Dunbar.

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Isn't that the point? It's just a tease.

Turn back the clock a few million years ... a bored primate decides to flip a banana skin at another as a lark. More or less the same thing.

Re: Less Playing = More Kudos

That's why I quit gigging. A lot of the music I enjoy is not tolerated by the public and doesn't sell drinks. So gigging has always meant I always had to focus on the mainstream side of my music...

Re: Less Playing = More Kudos

Not wasted, Bo. The punters love a bit of energy output from a lively young muso. I often found that the more out-of-sorts I felt, the more kudos I got. I used to imagine that audiences were...

Re: Drinking and Drumming

For me the effect wasn't always the same. Sometimes it would relax me, other times I'd struggle for control. Still, back in the day if you played in bars and didn't drink (and smoke etc) you'd be...

Re: The state of pop music

Duncan! Absolutely! I hated this song on first listen and nothing changed. When it was number one Judd Strunk's I'll Give A Daisy a day was number two. The state of pop music back then wasn't always...

Re: The state of pop music

When this conversation comes up I always think of Mason Williams's Classical Gas, which I always loved. I can't imagine such an "arty" piece of music hitting the top 40 today.

Re: Drumming and tennis

I played tennis for years and I did find some feedback between tennis and drumming. As John was saying, there's similarities in the stroke where you aim to use the timing of your stroke rather than...

I used to just dampen the hell out of the drums until the "boing" sounds went away :)

Re: How to stop playing slightly ahead of the beat?

Thanks for the awesome video, Bill - very helpful!

Another timing issue I've come across is the placement of the dubs by the engineer. A demo track my old band was doing sounded terrible on...

Re: How do I know if I will stick with drums? Advice please.

Doesn't have to be rudiments, Squad. Sometimes it's nice to just bat away on the pad without deafening myself and everyone within earshot. Perfect for ad breaks.

Kids, do not try this at home. The...
