I would suggest playing the HI Hat(left foot) flat footed(angel stroke). As Larryace stated..IMO and experience this will ground you! Like all of us best to start slow....

Mesh heads on toms and bass drum. Use practice pad for snare drum. Cover the cymbals with dish towels. Lots of work can be done with this setup. Denis

Deeps on what I am playing...loud, soft, slow, fast..etc...Softer low volume tends to be forefinger/1st joint, buzz roll forfinger/1st joint...louder fast tend to move to 2nd finger..etc..Denis

Next...play swing or blues ride pattern( all on the snare drum) and alternate between ride pattern and snare triplelets. ...
