I looked at that wood snare, and I don't know if it is a optical illusion, but those tension rods look like they enter the lugs at an extreme angle.

I've built my kit out of 5 ply with reinforcing rings toms and bass drums.
My suggestion is 6 ply toms 8 ply bass.

I do use the click track spacing method too. I bought a cheap Yamaha RX15 drum machine, like "wavelength" suggested.

I think your problem is the conversion to a acoustic kit.
Of course you are used of your Roland kit and it sounds great to you. You cannot expect a sound like that from your acoustic kit unless you...

I would say 2 boxes, Put the 14" into the bass drum and put enough packing material around so it does not move and does not damage the inside of the bass drum.
Same with the other two, put the 12"...

Vaughncraft maple snare

This is a Vaughncraft snare I've built.
It's a Maple solid steambent shell 14x6 with stainless steel
quick release lugs.
