Re: Thoughts On Phil Collins??

I agree, he has fantastic flow and an ear for detail. When I first saw the clip for the Abacab single on TV I remember being especially taken with his fat China groove in the bridge.

Shame about...

Re: Who "invented" the rock beat?

This is what I've been told.

From the limited amount I've heard there were backbeats played in the 40s in boogie woogie and blues groups.

Re: Harvard study of time keeping and groove

Interesting Caz. Never thought of it but errors would be fractal. Within long phase tempo variance trends there will have to be smaller phases with their own trends, and so on down to the...

Re: Thoughts On Phil Collins??

lol - that's the 80s. That decade had a corrupting influence on many bands. Its influence on prog was especially sad because the expectation was to play 3-minute pop songs with lots of four on the...

Re: Drummer quiz: What kind of drummer are you?

Rock drummer. No Gary Burton grip, though my kit's worth about 5x more than my car.

Re: Most important lessons for beginners

I agree. That's the main thing I missed through not taking lessons early on. It has limited me throughout my playing life. Get your hands and feet sorted and you can always pick up learn theory and...

Re: The being fired or quitting thread

Ditto.

A couple of times I've quit bands that were only ever short term things, in my mind anyway. I've usually quit when a band starts asking more of me than I'm prepared to give. I've never...

Re: playing less and keeping time

With every beat there are tempos - too fast and too slow - where the groove starts to become mechanical (not felt), and soon beyond that point it's not functional. It's hard to practice slow grooves...

Re: Great hip hop drummers?

Second Chris Dave. What a player!

Aaron Spears and Ron Bruner Jr are serious gospel chops players.

Amon Tobin's drum programming / sampling is a good listen.

Re: Better after time off?

Makes sense to me, speaking from my position of zero expertise. You come back after a break with fresh ears. The better we listen, the better we play.

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

He probably wants the band to be a boys' club (use of "boys" wasn't deliberate at first, but it works in context :).

Quite possibly he was trying to escape the women in his life or maybe he was...

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

It's true that bar band scene is a step behind mainstream society - bar bands have long worked amongst society's underbelly. It's the roughest part of the music industry and naturally male-dominated,...

Then there are bona fide dinosaurs, who will hopefully go the same way:

Re: Ok, do your worst ;)

Andy, seeing you and hearing you chat brought back good memories of London :)

I'd be even less comfortable than you were if put in that position, so I can't judge.

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

There's an art to rejecting morons. Back in the day I found asking him all about his family, as though I was actually interested worked best. Once you get them (reluctantly) thinking about their mum,...

Re: I think I'm losing it

I sacked myself from backup vocals from my old band years ago due to bad GORD (http://www.mydr.com.au/gastrointestinal-health/gastro-oesophageal-reflux-disease). My voice quickly became huskier and...

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

Late to the party here. Yup Madge, getting the second class citizen treatment is galling. We all know that a certain percentage of people are assholes.

I have to say that my treatment by men in...

Re: Why do listeners move on as they get older?

We look for different things in music.

Novelty, stimulation, excitement, inspiration, amusement, reassurance and comfort (nostalgia), resonance with current feelings, social lubricant /...

Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

Overdone melisma is the vocal equivalent to shredding, as is fast rapping. It also often sounds pretty bad, being more impressive than expressive - and probably heaps of fun for the performers. So i...

Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

Multi faceted question.

I would say exposure is key. A great deal of incredible music is not heard, both then and now. "Classic" and "popular" are not related to quality.

I also think Larry...

When I think of all the useless things available on the market, I'm not sure I have a problem with this. At least it's drum related :)

With development, better patches and a drummer not intent on...
