Re: To blast beat, or not to blast beat?

Any new technique or skill you can learn is just another string to your bow. Learn anything and everything, you never know when you will need it. As far as actual blast beats are concerned, it's more...

Re: Close micing is cheating

It's been interesting reading all of the responses on here, and I have to agree with the majority. Close micing in no way enhances your technique or makes you a better player. I don't see how it can...

Re: holding your sticks upside down

I'll occasionally flip a stick round if I'm doing rimshots/cross stick patterns, but I don't play with them upside down generally for two reasons. First, I feel like I can be a little more precise...

Re: Interesting groupings - rudiments around the kit

Im not actually changing the bass drum, just the pattern with the hands over the top. It makes it feel like the bass drum is changing. It might be worth checking out Simon Phillips. The ostinatos and...

Re: Tuning your drums to notes A,C,E..etc...???

i always try and tune to what rings best in the shell. I dont tune to specific notes, but i try and get the notes to relate to each other, so they usually form an arpeggio.

Re: Interesting groupings - rudiments around the kit

i know what you mean, i love doing that. and also playing around with the accents, eg;

(1) 2 3 1 (2) 3 1 2 (3) 1 2 3

(1) (2) 3 1 (2) (3) 1 2 (3) (1) 2 ...

Re: Do you groove or at least keep time when you solo?

I know what you mean, but the occasional stick trick can be great as far as a performance goes. I saw Robin Guy play at Drumfest earlier this year and he wowed the crowd with his performance and...

Re: where to download sheet music not tabs

Drum mags are a good resource for sheet music. Modern Drummer, Rhythm, Drummer all usually do sheet music, song transcriptions etc. If you're trying to find sheet music for a specific song then there...

Re: Your hardest song your band does

Re: Independence exercises?

i used to know a few that involved triplets with one hand and straight or swung rhythms with the other. those used to help my independence.

e.g- play the standard 'swing' rhythm with your right...

Re: Tip Jars

I've never seen any tip jars in the UK, I don't know if it is different in other places in the world. Buskers and street players always have tip jars, bowls, open guitar cases, hats etc, but I have...

Re: Played my first wedding gig

Good stuff. it's good to be professional when playing gigs, especially at things like weddings. When we have done weddings, everyone is quiet until we start. it's just more professional. we all warm...

Re: Jam Tracks

I know, some of the tracks they use are amazing. I'd love some of Tony Royster's backing tracks. I always jam along to an album called 'VU' by a band named 'Zenith Patrol', which no one seems to have...

Re: An "audience friendly" drum solo

I thought it was a good solo. the constant bass drum/hat combination was a bit monotonous for me though and mabye it was a little too long too. There were some good ideas in there. There were bits...

I used to have the same problem. A few things helped me correct it. the first thing was just practice, getting better with my technique and just generally becoming more comfortable behind the kit....

Re: Lack of Excitement Live

I usually find one of the best ways to inject energy into a performance is to try and relax, and just enjoy it. That sort of thing will rub off onto the rest of the band too usually. Sometimes for...

Re: Need Help!! Shuffle Songs

I think the shuffle is something that every drummer should learn if they are trying to be an all round drummer. I've used it no end of times, especially in function sets. I've also played a good...

Re: Need Help!! Shuffle Songs

'Rosanna' by Toto was the one that got me working on my shuffle. Steely Dan's 'Home at last' is a good one, along with 'Babylon Sisters'.
