Re: Bonham amber vistalite purchase/questions

If the Powerstroke3 isn't working for you, a Pinstripe (batter) would be the next pre-muffled head I'd try. I'm not a big fan of Pins on wood shelled drums, but I use 'em a lot on Vistalite, as...

Re: Can you fix this tom?

What year, and what type of shell? I'd guess the mount is overwhelming the shell. The Swiv-o-matic and Memriloc tom mounts are both rather large, for a 10" drum. Switching to a RIMS style mount will...

Re: Just starting at 53 and will need all the help I can get!

Mehmets are great cymbals. I have 6 Mehmets, 2 Agops, and 1 pre-split. I also have 8 Masterwork, and 1 Buzin (comparable brands). Try out as many as you can, and find out what series you really...

Re: Just starting at 53 and will need all the help I can get!

Exactly. The hi-hats and the ride are typically used to propel the music. The crash highlights the music.
Istanbul is cymbal nirvana. Beware ...... once you play hand hammered Turkish cymbals...

Re: Ever have a drums finish sway you away from purchasing it?

Yup. I like blonde wood. Natural finishes. And a nice yellowed, aged patina.

Re: 78/79 Ludwig 18x16 Thermogloss Floor Tom

Another option, replace two of the tom legs with Ludwig fold-out spurs (or copies). With the remaining leg mount, you can use it for an L-arm (or not). Lots of 18's are played on the floor, without a...

Re: best deal on DW Performance Series?

4 piece are selling new on eBay (from drum shops) for $1999.98. Free shipping. 5 piece .... $2044.97 to $2187.98. If you're walking into a store, cash in hand, you'd probably be able to cut a deal....

Re: How to make my vintage ludwig sound better

Here's catalog pages for Ludwig drum sets. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_drumsets.html Ludwig had Quadra-plus and Octa-plus kits, but the toms were concert toms. So, I'd guess your father...

Re: How to make my vintage ludwig sound better

About the last thing I'd call my '69-'71 Luddy 3 ply's, is bright. I run coated Emperors over clear Ambassadors, on the toms. Basically, the equivalent of your Evans. Now, if that combo is too...

Re: What makes a pro kit?

Well, one of the main reasons to by pro series drums is drum size selection. You get a Sonor Bop kit ..... that's a 18x16, 12x8, 14x14. You want a 18x14, or an 18x12 kick ..... then you gotta shop...

Re: Got hustled, any input apreciated

I wouldn't give up on 'em right away. Yes, you paid to much ..... but that's done and over. Put some new heads on 'em, and play 'em. At least they're a set to play, while you can research and decide...

Re: The legendary sweet spot

I think you're right, here. And you'd probably get three "ranges" of tune. Low, medium, and high ..... within the given parameter of the drums sweet spot. The widest range drum I ever had,...

Re: The legendary sweet spot

This. I've had plenty of drums that sound horrible "just above wrinkle". And you have to get up past that (more than just above), to get a pleasant tone. And that's where the sweet spot starts. Once...

Re: Premier kit 1970's ?

Re: Help me find which batter & reso heads I should use?

Chasing recorded sound is a very hard venture. For one thing, the type of mics and the studio EQ/effects has a huge affect on the recorded sound. Better to concentrate on what your drums sound like...
