Re: Billy Higgins

His playing with John Scofield was great. Immense amount of respect for Billy.

Re: Blindfolded Buying

I agree - most of my buying and that of guitarist/bassist/horn player friends has all been intuitive. If I love a cymbal, I generally know after hitting it a couple times. This is even more so with...

Re: WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO MOST OF YOU'LL LISTEN TO??

I love all sorts of experimental and avant garde music.

I listen to Miles Davis, Aphex Twin, Portishead, Wayne Shorter, My Morning Jacket, Radiohead, John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Miles...

Re: The Old Drummers or the New Drummers?

Me too! King Crimson, Yes, earlier Genesis, everything that Captain Beefheart ever produced... they're all above Rush on my prog list.

Re: The Old Drummers or the New Drummers?

Tony Williams, Jack Dejohnette, and Max Roach have all influenced me heavily.

However, I'm constantly going through phases obsessing over the new guys - Jojo Mayer, Chris Dave, Mark Giuliana...

Re: Music without drums

There's definitely music without drums that is very rhythmic -- Some even sounds as if it's imitating a drummer.

I always thought Cecil Taylor played...

Music without drums

Hello again everyone!

Haven't posted in awhile - been pretty busy.

I was wondering - do any of you guys listen to music without drums? I'm not talking music with electronic loops; I'm talking...

Re: Does anyone NOT like snare ring?

I think there's a time for every drum sound - but I'm a fan of dry, articulate snare sounds. So my default snare is generally tuned in such a way. However, when I'm playing strictly backbeat-based...

Re: Good glitch beat songs, or even better, drummers?

Have you heard 'Broken Bells'? It's a collaboration between Danger Mouse and the singer of the Shins. Their first album was incredible.

Re: Why?

Sometimes a slight fluctuation in tempo can result in a positive shift of feeling in the song - speeding up can bring up the energy, and slowing down can mellow out the song. Maybe the rest of the...

Re: Photos of finished Cocobolo kit

Ohh my God. That. Is. Beautiful. That wood is absolutely stunning. Paired up with the minimalist sizes and quality hardware, that kit is KILLER. Good idea not muffling anything - based on the...

Re: Piccolo Snare Pop (tuning).

You're gonna get a better 'pop' out of a single ply head like an Ambassador, as opposed to the double ply Emperor. However, I've found that by cranking the bottom head and tuning the top head medium...

Re: New Snare Choices!

I'm a big fan of 12 inchers - and I love the Musashi. I'd like to say that I've played the others, but, unfortunately, I have not. Oak makes a great drum and, if I were you, I'd snatch up that...

Re: Grip Too Tight?

Yikes -- looks like you're gonna need a new kit.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yes, you're probably gripping the sticks too tightly. I've gotten blisters on my thumbs before after 4 hour sets and...

Re: Sonic Identity?

I don't really think I support my buddy's opinion in this case. While I have a pretty firm ideA of how I want my drums to sound, I feel no need to sacrifice versatility to feed a conceptual signature...

Re: Live click

I would say that using a metronome live depends on the type of music you're playing. If you're playing free jazz or Grateful Dead type stuff, I wouldn't use a click live - tempo shifting is natural...

Re: Sparkle vs Natural Finishes

I'd definitely go with natural finish as my preferred look. There's so many variations, whereas sparkles tend to get old IMO.
