Re: Playing with a click track

I don't know if it's worth focusing on it, but a drummer should be able to work with a simple click if that's what is put in front of him. I think that being familiar enough with the tock-tick click...

Re: Playing with a click track

That's crucial for success with a click: you've got to have a click that you can work with.

I rarely have just a 'tock tick tick tick' click in my ear, I prefer some sort of rhythm, an actual drum...

Re: Playing with a click track

If you know how to work with a click, no one will ever guess you're using one.

If you don't know how to work with it, everyone will know.

Re: Playing with a click track

Playing well with a click is important in many situations, not just the studio. Today, only a few genres/styles remain completely exempt to a click.

Re: Guitar Center and DW

DW (like Ludwig, Pearl, Gretsch and the other majors) does not sell direct. They have a large dealer network, and doesn't step on the their dealers' toes. However, they would likely allow a sale to...

Re: That moment....

That's more than just a "good" crowd, looks like 1500+! However I wouldn't call that a massive stage. :)

Have fun!

Re: Hal Blaine's Monster set w/ Donn Bennett

The kit - w/original timbales - started at $50k a few years ago when I saw it at Donn's shop.

Re: Timing test

I got several 900+ scores with a 931 high. The tactile feel of the keyboard has a lot to do with nailing the time, my external keyboard didn't fare as well as my laptop's keyboard.

Can't help on the photo pass, but I hope it works out. We just had a night off and look nice and relaxed!

Re: Looking for some kind of visual metronome slave unit

Is it essential that the band/you be on a click? If there's a track, it's obviously necessary, but is the click being used just to regulate the tempo? That's primarily your job, and in sections where...

Re: Looking for some kind of visual metronome slave unit

In theory, it sounds like a sensible idea. But with vocalists, who tend to slide a little in terms of timekeeping - and that's fine... - introducing a visual reference while they're singing and...

Re: Playing with a click track

There are a number of threads on the topic, addressing the various aspects of when a click is best-used, how to implement, etc.

As usual with most things in music, there's not a single answer. The...

Re: Thank You, "No Name" Drummers

Also achieved with the edge of a penny or a dime (in case brushes aren't handy!)

But agreed, I always keep my eyes and ears (and mind) open to what other drummers are doing. As the saying goes,...

Re: Joe Wong: How Do Drummers Navigate Through Life?

In my 25 years or so of doing interviews, a lot of the same questions come up, and some are necessary in order to establish who I am and what I do. I certainly don't mind such 'stock' questions, and...

Re: Joe Wong: How Do Drummers Navigate Through Life?

Joe interviewed me almost a year ago, and at the time I noted that he asked questions that I hadn't heard before, and that really made me think and answer more thoughtfully. I think "incisive" was...

Re: The state of pop music

Hadn't heard the song before, but it sounds good to me.

Does that fact that it's ultra-easy to play (from a drummer's perspective) somehow make it less enjoyable? If you want to play drums -...

No offense taken.

Re: Talking to the doctors now....

A little over 2 years ago, I also made a change from a heavy trap case (containing all cymbals, all stands, pedal, seat, sticks, etc) to cymbal bag, stand bag, small tom bag for the pedal and seat......

Re: hihat position: the glitch

I've always tried to make sure everything is positioned consistently, so that I could play with my eyes closed and not miss anything. That's why a rack is crucial on tour, so that 5-6 nights a week,...

Re: Clem Cattini

Certainly know that name and his work! There's a great/funny portrayal of him in the Joe Meek movie "Telstar" (a dramatic/gripping must-see movie for fans of early rock!)

Re: Would You Match A Kit To Fit An Audition?

Obviously bring the right gear - # of pieces and the appropriate sizes - from a practicality standpoint. But it's also a signal to the band/artist that you known what you're doing. Don't oversell, or...
