Re: Hey Gretsch experts...

By the way - the Metal shelled Gretsch snare drum - the one you pictured here is a very nice drum - sensitive and very 'snary' a beauty.

The only Gretsch metal snare drum I have is a 5.5x14...

Re: Hey Gretsch experts...

Looks to be a Gretsch Full Range (Custom USA from Ridgeland) snare drum - 2001-2013. It should have a paper tag in it with model and serial number.
The 2014 price (MSRP) list for the Hammered...

Re: Hey Gretsch experts...

If you can post a photo of the drum and badge and if possible the paper tag inside I could tell you roughly when it was made. Some Renown drums were made with what they call the Square Badge....it...

Re: Custom Kit Advice - Mixing Wood

Absolutely they do, but in the bigger scheme of things when you take everything else into consideration - hoops and all the other hardware, heads, edges and tuning I don't think you'd be able to tell...

Re: Custom Kit Advice - Mixing Wood

In my experience of playing drums off and on since the early 60's and collecting and restoring some since 2009 I have come to this conclussion about different wood shells:

If you were to take a...

Re: What's the sound of GUM wood?

The Gum wood Gretsch uses grows in the Eastern USA - American Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua.....for us horticulture folks). A very nice tree....feature bark and the maple-like leaves have a...

Re: Help me choose which thread to read about which kit to buy

I don't know about "biased" regarding the help choosing a drum kit threads. Most of the people commenting are giving good information on what they know about drums in general. There are dozens of...

Re: Mid/high level kits.

My $2450 (MSRP - $2999) Purewood Renown Gretsch kit (not the same drums as the Maple Renowns) sound everybit as good as, and is made as well, as the Custom USA Gretsch shellpacks. My Custom USA 3pc...

Re: Mid/high level kits.

There are a lot of very good quality drums out there these days for under $1000. You can certainly buy a Pro-Level kit (at least a shellpack) for under $2000.
You just have to check em...

Re: Looking for solid value kit on a $1500-$1700 budget.

Long&McQuade does sell some used drums. I traded 5 snare drums for a down payment on a Custom USA Gretsch kit a few years back. You just have to check the store location to see what they have.

Re: I need help picking a drumset!

Here's a great buy - a little over your stated price range but a super buy just the same. Huge bass drum (18x24) - myself I prefer the Vintage sizing in 14x24.
My Purewood kit has the 18x22 and it...

Re: I need help picking a drumset!

I didn't check on the size specs on this kit.....too fast on the finger buttons haha.

But you can pick up a Catalina kit with bd in sizes 20-22 well below $600 on sale sometimes -...

Re: I need help picking a drumset!

I agree that your current drums are not bad and could be much enhanced by adding new heads and work on tuning. Also I think adding a cymbal (maybe cowbell and block) and stand or even a side...

Re: What's the best things about your playing?

I'm pretty good at playing rudiments and I love to export them around the kit - fun stuff. But, I've never been 'tested' as in NARD etc. Maybe that would humble me haha. My single, double and...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Thanks guys - yes it's fun taking a cheap old drum and bringing it back to life and playing it...once again.

Here's the Mica MIJ 8x12 in the mix - to the left of my hats - with my Purewood 6pc.
