Re: I jammed with people I didn't know!

Sounds really fun, Madge! Welcome to the wonderful world of improvising :) I agree with Aeolian, jamming is the best fun if you find people who can give and take.

Re: Ginger Baker Reacts to Passing of Jack Bruce

I didn't get that from it at all.

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

There was a time when I liked a challenge. These days, just getting through a day without back pain is a challenge, let alone having some hardarse bandleader getting on my case. So you can take your...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Larry, it sounds to me like he's an old school bandleader. Like the old jazz groups. It was a point of pride that you could play your stuff in any situation.

It's a time honoured and valid way of...

Re: Ginger Baker Reacts to Passing of Jack Bruce

I'm relieved. I was expecting another faux pas followed by yet another anti Ginger session. Obviously, despite their differences there was also great respect.

I have no problem with artists...

Re: 420 musicians onstage

Every single note on my two Soundcloud channels was played and mixed while high. Every single one! It's sloppy at times but we like to improvise, and there's always room for improvement - practice...

Re: 420 musicians onstage

Maybe some, but after a while musicians get to know your playing and it's a comedown when someone is too high (or unrehearsed or overly ambitious) to be tight. I like playing in a straight band...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

I find three ways through the problem:

1. Think of the beat backwards until it straightens out in your head (I've done this with You Really Got Me and All the Day and All of the Night).

2. Get...

Re: 420 musicians onstage

I find that the 'erb works best as either an "all in" or "none-in" situation. In my experience, straight musicians can get annoyed when baked players mess up.

However, the Wailers and many others...

Re: I suck at power ballads.

Jingle bells are wonderful :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13L6sjk080c

A solid list of objectionable percussives there, Andy, though I'm a fan of well placed whistles, though probably not...

Re: I suck at power ballads.

Power ballads can be hard to lock in - with the dramatic faux timpani fills being very unforgiving, and it's easy to get scrappy coming out of them and returning to the groove.

Just as jazz is...

Re: Revolutionary cymbal choking technique ;)

Good to see some teamwork going on! Seems like they are comfortable with you :)

At one stage we were practicing Dr Who with me playing the bass with brushes while our bassist made the notes. It...

Re: A rear line day - mini report.

Not just marketing but ubiquity. I'm not even a gear-head but I consistently see those telltale Camco round doodads on numerous name drummer kits. Many players that others look up to use DWs.

Re: screwed up my first gig

Everyone make mistakes when they are learning. Most of us are learning all our musical lives. Remember, this doesn't just apply to drummers; your band mates no doubt had their own "learning...

Re: How sentimental are you about your drums?

I'm not sure it's far to compare inanimate objects with people. Sure, I love my Gurus and would be saddened to see them go, but they are just objects. All they can do is look elegant and make nice...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Yes Uncle :) The tone of low volume sounds on drum kit are more beautiful to my ear.

Cheers Tap. Whenever I've sat at a big kit I've felt all at sea (and compelled to just play ride, kick,...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I actually agree with Tap's view but it's not a matter of skill but physics.

At very low volumes the instrument has a range of subtleties that cannot be found at higher volumes. There's also a...

Re: How LOUD were the classic rock bands??

Mid 70s. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. A friend had scored front row seats nice and close the RHS PS speakers. Someone brought a type of ear plug wax.

The concerts going on and I'm wondering how it...

Re: Whose voice would you like to have counting on your metronome?

I want a cowbell or woodblock sound. Not a voice - and especially not a sexy voice. You need voices that cut through like Frau Farbissina or Jerry Lewis.

Re: Thanks ... I think

As an older Aussie, I call it all \chips. Chips are chips. So are French fries. So are crisps. We differentiate with either - hot chips or chips. French fries to us are McDonalds's cheap alternative....

I get and give hugs hello and goodbye from the band every time we catch up so it's business as usual.

Re: How were drums taught back in the day?

This resonates with me. I saw a lot of local rock, fusion and jazz groups when I was young and inevitably absorbed things from them. Being relatively isolated in Australia, I saw only a few big shows...
