Re: Ed Mendel: Creating Drums From Ancient Sunken Timber

Scott,

You shed light on areas I didn't even know existed. I used to read your stuff in Modern Drummer back in the day and I can't tell you how cool it is to have you here. And you're still doing...

Re: ALBUMS THAT HAD AN LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR DRUMMING

A lot of albums had an effect on me, but not my drumming. Yes's "Close To The Edge" is a good example. Also it's more the drummer, not any particular album who affected my playing. Unbeknownst to me...

Re: Yamaha Stage Custom Vs OCDP Venice Vs PDP Concept Maple

FWIW, I owned a set of Yamaha SC and a set of the PDP all maple shells. With all due respect to Yamaha, which is a great company, but compared to the SC, from the driver's seat, PDP is just the...

Re: Nuggets of hard won wisdom

I try and be considerate to the others and do all my stands off stage and bring it up in the most logical order. Also, when we're done, I try and get my bass drum off the stage quickly so they don't...

Re: 2015 RRHOF inductees. Congrats Ringo!

Joan Jett before Chicago? No disrespect to JJ, but Chicago's music made a much bigger impact on culture from my POV.

I wonder what criteria is used to the induction process. Clearly, it's...

Re: I know - this is a real first world problem.

I've been on both sides where I gigged my 6000 dollar DWs and now I gig a "lesser" set. Which really isn't lesser tone-wise, just price-wise. I can see both sides. If you have something nice, why not...

Re: How to place air vents on my 3 ply African Mahogany Shells

FWIW, I'd remove the rubber gaskets from your shells. Don't worry about the lug leaving an impression on the finish. You can't see it anyway, and it's better for tone without lug gaskets. I remove...

Re: I know - this is a real first world problem.

I'd take the black Pearls and spare the crowd the wacky color of those Luds.

Re: The "Jimi Hendrix of drums"

While I agree with that it should be Tony Williams, I'm thinking the guy was referring to another. What popped in my mind first was Moon, but then I thought maybe Buddy Rich, which I don't see.

Nuggets of hard won wisdom

I'm sure we all have some little things we do...silently, that we've learned on our own that we employ, to the end of being regarded as a good player.

Like for instance, and this is speaking...

Re: Does playing covers change you?

This is my favorite part. It's funny how something so "simple" can take that long to actually understand.

Bottom line, playing simply is a challenge too. It's a challenge to ignore all the...

Re: The sound I like

I'd stick to your guns. You put in your fair share of sweat I'm guessing. I feel it's your right to sound as you wish. Guitarists...don't think like a drummer. A good drummer who gets a great sound...

Re: Does playing covers change you?

Bravo Lar. Great post. Very honest and I can definitely relate. It's easy to look down on stuff. It kind of sucks too, I do it way too much. Everything requires a certain skill, even pounding nails...

Actually, somebody from this forum must know somebody who lives near Mary. A referral seems quite possible. Who here is near Cincinnati?

Re: 15" snares

I'm trying to imagine it....yea....that's it...lol. I imagine the sound it would make to be suited to a big ol' power ballad song, made to be really whooped, rather than finessed. But I never played...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

In a perfect world. People regularly abuse power positions. I remember a particular 3rd grade teacher making fun of the class crybaby...She was mocking him. I remember thinking it was wrong even...

Mr. MonkeysFly, since you mentioned Philly, I live close to Philly. Why don't you come on over my place and we'll see if we can hash out whats going on?

Re: So you're going to a band audition...

Since no one has said it before, if possible, invite all the drummers you can to one of your gigs and then afterwards, see who is most interested in being in the band. Let them do some self weeding....

Re: Musical Instrument Museum - Drums of the World

Cool stuff Jim. Where's the Saturns? And can you believe some of the badges on these drums? That snare drum, the one owned by Og...that has some serious attitude. Thanks Jim!

John you da man when it comes to Rogers knowledge. Could you consolidate some Rogers info for me please?

Re: Always out of breath, need to get my stamina up somehow.

Jogging. Or your favorite form of cardio. So you huff and puff. That will increase your oxygen capacity.

Re: Drumming as Art

For sure. IMO art happens when the human playing the music gives of themselves in a completely honest way. Think Hiromi. She is laying her personality...herself... out there for all to see, with no...
