Practicing in an apartment without using an e-kit

I want to find ways of being able to imitate the feel of a drum kit (mainly just bass/snare/hats) in a way that is quiet enough for an apartment. The best thing I can think of so far is to use a...

Re: Head choice for Gretsch Catalina Jazz, looking for a folk/pop sound

Head choice for Gretsch Catalina Jazz, looking for a folk/pop sound

I've been stuck in jazz so long I can't figure out what heads to buy for the type of music I'm playing now. I want a punchy bass (which I already have with the stock head, but suggestions welcome),...

Re: How do you manage to transport hardware without having it all in one super heavy bag?

Thanks for the suggestions! Think I may have to look for an old suitcase or golf bag...

How do you manage to transport hardware without having it all in one super heavy bag?

My hardware bag broke the other day due to too much weight in it (all of my hardware, which isn't all that much). It's way too heavy and uncomfortable to carry, has anyone come up with a solution for...

Taking wrap off old + low end kit...will it affect the sound?

I've got a Mapex UB kit that I've for about 9 years now, and I thought I might try taking off the wrap and refinishing it. My only question is, do you think the removal of the wrap will significantly...

Looking for the best Melbourne teachers

I'm looking to fly down to Melbourne a couple of times this year for a few lessons, any recommendations for great teachers? So far I've been told to check out Ben Vanderwal.

Re: Aussie drummers - second hand Catalina Maple price?

I'm thinking this kit may be an option as an 'in-between' kit before I can afford a Renown or similar. At the moment I've got a Mapex UB starter kit which I've had for 7 or 8 years. I've got two more...

Aussie drummers - second hand Catalina Maple price?

To the Australian drummers out there - how much do you think a 2-4 year old second hand New Catalina Maple 6 piece would go for second hand here? What do they retail for?

Re: Double duty on NYE?

I wish I was! I'm not a fan of NYE anyway, so I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on much.

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

Cool, thanks! All the info is really helpful - I would go somewhere and compare if I could but not really an option where I am. Even Allans Music/Billy Hydes in Brisbane doesn't have that great a...

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

I guess maple would probably suit me a little more. But I'd really like to compare side by side. Have you ever tuned them for a more 'jazz' setting? Got them to 'sing' a little?

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

Yeah definately, just not as many options in Australia as the States. What kit did you get?

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

Yeah the Saturn bass mount seems to be a smart idea. That listing is weird though, says its a 4 piece in the title, but in the description it says it comes with a snare as well. It would be great, if...

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

Maybe virgin bass drums arent such a big deal, if it meant a better sound. Still dont know about the 22/20 inch bass though, anyone have much experience playing with 20s in different...

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

I guess I just prefer setting up and positioning with mounted toms, which is annoying since most of the high end kits seem to only come with virgin bass drums haha. As well as less hardware, always...

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

Also had a look at a Gretsch Renown, for about 3500 dollars...had the 24 month interest free deal, but also had a 22 virgin bass drum.

Re: Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

Talking AUD, probably about $1800-$2000 max. I've been looking on ebay, and though shipping is expensive, getting a kit from the states is an option. Went into my local store today, there was a...

Recommend me a kit! (criteria)

Must be versatile, suited from jazz to rock
5 piece preferrable
Something that I'm not going to be unhappy with in a few years
Good enough for pro gigging/recording. Not talking world touring...
