Re: I've got the "looper" blues

I have played with a guitarist who sometimes uses one and it's awful. As you say, it's not a metronome; it captures all of HIS imperfections and then repeats them. His playing is going to have a...

Re: "Play something." What do you play?

Depending on the musical tastes of the person who asks, I try to come up with an easily identifiable drum part from a song s/he knows. So if it's someone my age, maybe 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, My...

Re: Steve Maxwell's Rules!

Okay, guys. I am committing to making a trip out to Steve's store. I may place an order and then take delivery, or I might be too impatient and just drive up there one weekend and soak it all in just...

Re: Tempo comfort zones

That is very interesting. Resting heart rate of 60bpm?! Do you run marathons?! Very impressive.

Re: Tempo comfort zones

Yeah, this is basically what I do. It takes a long time, but so does everything important, I suppose.

Re: Tempo comfort zones

That's a good idea, going double- and half-time. I've done that, but not rigorously. I should explore that more.

Re: Tempo comfort zones

Very interesting. There have been times when, at a really slow tempo, I've been tempted to play the motion to smaller note subdivisions without actually playing them. I think that's what you're...

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

I hate that. I would never upload someone else playing without vetting it through them first.

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

Haha. You got me, Grea! I should take my own advice, it's true.

Yes, I do experience what you're talking about when navigating different kinds of music.

I actually thought about starting a...

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

Of course, but sometimes we're rehearsing a new song and we have to learn the parts, so it's not so much about feel and precision as just hitting the right notes and figuring out where the breaks...

Tempo comfort zones

I think most of us have certain tempos we are more comfortable playing than others. You know, the tempos where you feel totally in control and all your stuff works. But then there are certain tempos...

Re: Annoyed and disappointed with myself

Who reported that you didn't play loud enough? Audience members?

I don't necessarily put this on the drummer. The band has a collective mix that needs to be worked out. If the band didn't have a...

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

Lots of good comments. Yeah, I guess the thing that bugs me is the notion that I need to be super-focused to sound presentable. I would like to think that I have "another level" I reach for when...

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

To clarify a bit more, I've had live gigs recorded and I've been okay with the results. What I noticed from this recording of our rehearsal is just how loose and sloppy I allowed things to become....

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

I record regularly and I don't have an issue with my performance when I know I am being recorded or when I play live. Well, I do sometimes have issues with it, but that's not what I'm talking about...

Anger, dismay and confusion

Those were my emotions when I listened to a recording of a band rehearsal from a couple months ago. I didn't know the guitarist was recording us until after. What I heard upon playback was positively...

Re: The Supra returns ;)

I think about this whenever the subject of drum sounds comes up. When a certain drum sound—or any instrument's sound—has been used for decades, it becomes ingrained in our DNA as listeners. Whether...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

Tuning drums is really ridiculous, when you think about it; eight or ten lugs on each side, times four or five or maybe more drums; an ambiguous fundamental with overtones; intervals between batter...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

There was a time in my life when I took the "get off my lawn" attitude about music, being mad that other people weren't "as hip as me" and complaining that everyone liked junk or whatever. But I...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I think traditional grip does add a layer of difficulty for certain things, but I'm not convinced that's true of all things. I don't hold a pencil or spoon the same way I hold a hammer. Neither does...

Re: The Speed Obsession

I don't think the preoccupation with instrumental acrobatics is limited to drummers. Singers may not be judged on how fast they sing, but people do notice things like the high notes or the range of...

Re: Bo rants!

My barometer is usually comparing my bad band experiences to rogue_drummer's. If mine is worse than any of his, I know it's not gonna work out.

Re: Yolanda Charles on drummers! :)

I'm sorry, did the subject of drummers come up in that video? I must have missed it.

Misbehaving,
