Re: Name that rhythm

See LarryC's last post; the "flat tire" is a type of shuffle, played exactly the way you describe.

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I saw Charlie live with Ornette and Pat Metheny on the Song X tour! Jack DeJohnette and Denardo Coleman both on drums. The funny part was watching members of the audience (at Hill Auditorium in Ann...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I hear you, Num. I just listened to that track yesterday. I dug out my Ornette stuff yesterday and listened to all those classics.

Re: Name that rhythm

I listed a couple of old rock and roll tunes but here's one of my favorites in a different style. The great Billy Higgins, playing "in the cracks," as a former member here (I'm sorry, can't remember...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

Been thinking about Charlie Haden, whom we lost last week. Here's an all-time favorite he played on, off the outstanding Ornette Atlantic date, Change Of The Century. #newthing

Re: Name that rhythm

Old threads.

Speaking of missing persons who posted to that thread, whatever happened to DeltaDrummer? I remember some fallout from the thread where he posted a cut-time shuffle and haven't really...

Re: Name that rhythm

Larry,

Check out the drum grooves in Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On or Jailhouse Rock.

Re: Is Dennis Chambers ill?

It's understandably a personal matter but we are hearing something is wrong but left guessing what it is. Depending on whom you believe, Dennis is currently hospitalized in Spain, Italy or...

Re: Name that rhythm

Interesting thread on Boogaloo: http://www.drummagazine.com/lessons/post/the-boogaloo-factor/

Ants linked to this in a thread about Boogaloo a couple years ago. Here it is again.

Sounds like...

Re: Name that rhythm

Great thread idea, Larry. Bo did a nice piece on different rhythms every drummer should know a while back. Things like bossa nova and such. I think he even demonstrated how to play each groove.

I...

Re: Elvin Jones Interview from 1968

Incredible read! I enjoyed that immensely. I love the writing style. That art is so unappreciated these days, as someone pointed out earlier.

I really dug Elvin speaking about his time in Pontiac...

Re: Not denting heads

I try to steer clear of making definitive statements based on my own experience, so I can only speak to what I found.

In my case, I dented the hell out of heads until I learned to loosen up my...

Re: Do you think it's time for your favorite drummer to retire?

I thought Max Roach's last recording before he passed away was hard to listen to. When Bill Bruford announced he was retiring from live performance, he cited that recording as an example when talking...

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

This.

I tend to fly off the handle when some idiot tells me something that is demonstrably not true. But this is the best thing you can do.

My problem is I would probably accompany it with a...

Wow! I will have to finish reading when I get home, but man, what a find. Nice work as always, D!

Re: The matching snare

The classic, so-called "bop kits" typically feature a wood snare drum in a matching finish. Metal snare drums seem to have risen in popularity with the advent of rock music.

Re: RANT: Disappointed in Sonor

Hahaha. I missed Andy's comment the first time. Well played, sir. :)

I'd be bummed about the generic nature of the response. Not so much that I'd expect them to jump through hoops for me about a...

Re: Cajon players - rock back or hunch over?

Sitting on a chair! Of course! So obvious, it never occurred to me. Thanks for the great idea, John Gerrard.

I hate playing these things mostly because they're so uncomfortable for me. Obviously,...

Congrats, Bill!

I know the guy who engineered his new album and I'm still waiting to talk to him about the experience. I bet he has some stories!

Re: Scott K Fish: Interviewing Advice from Buddy Rich

It's probably not fair for me to say that. He just comes across as insufferable whenever I see him in an interview or read what he has to say.

Re: Scott K Fish: Interviewing Advice from Buddy Rich

If you withheld the name, told the above story and asked us to guess which drummer said that, I think we'd all know it was Bruford. His personality is just indefensible.

Re: Jazz players - did we get this right?

I think they sound great. It's not the tuning I would use, necessarily, but as others have pointed out, there's no single right way. Terrific sound.
