Re: Got called for a Session, YAY! Gear Upgrade?

*huff puff* "Oh yeah?!?!?"

Larry/Cheech is probably so high that he'll forget who he's berating halfway through his rant...

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

Take private lessons and play out in your local scene. The thought of having a music degree is alluring, for sure, but most working musicians don't have them (in my town, at least...). A music...

Re: Got called for a Session, YAY! Gear Upgrade?

I didn't realize that suggesting to somebody that they should feel comfortable with the gear they play would possibly be grounds for being called a liar. My apologies for spreading brazen lies, and...

Re: Got called for a Session, YAY! Gear Upgrade?

Make sure you are comfortable with whatever gear you're using for the session. What I mean by that is the A Medium Ride will be a "stiffer" cymbal to play than your Bosphorus. If the rebound or...

Re: Reinforcing rings

I believe they are not necessary. With modern production techniques, drums are able to hold their shape without the added support of re rings.

...with that said, they certainly offer a...

Re: Timeless wrap finishes.

That's a good option, too--a natural maple or birch, something with a subtle grain to it.

"Timeless" and "versatile" might be considered two different terms in my book. "Timeless" would imply a...

Re: hi hat opening sound

I love when that happens. Variety is the spice of love. :P

Get comfortable with both, and use what YOU feel is necessary/appropriate. If you don't particularly like the shoulder sound, then...

Sounds like you've made your decision. What else do you want anyone to say?

Re: Band leaders

Sounds like you have been subjected to terrible leaders. A good leader is one that will make you feel valued, will honor your input and opinions, and will guide the group rather than simply dictate...

Re: Relationship between members of the band

It depends what people in the band want to do. If the recording costs are split among all of the members, then they should AT LEAST get paid back those expenses.

A 6-piece band I'm in has the...

Re: Where do all the drum sets go?

I wonder this as well. I imagine there are a TON of kits sitting in garages/attics/closets/storage units just collecting dust and/or mold. There are some collectors sitting on warehouses full of...

Re: Drum Workshop Worth The Cash?

Agree. I had a set of DWs for years and could never get as pleasing of a drum sound out of them as the 3-ply Ludwigs. Great drums, but just not as good as certain other drums.

Re: Is it bad to have little or no individuality?

You've got to start somewhere. If you find some gear along your journey that you like better, then you might consider buying it. If you never find any gear you consider to be better, then so be it....

Just a G.A.S. observation

So, I have not been checking in on the forums as frequently as I used to (a couple of drum forums, a bass forum, a recording forum...), and I've noticed a significant drop in the amount of mental...

Re: Double stroke roll lesson for Modern Drummer

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for teaching that double strokes are strokes, and not perpetuating the lie that you need to bounce the strokes at high speeds! Thank you! Kudos on the vid!

Re: Its a new age.

We have done something like this at concerts, to much success. Our version was, "Pull out your cell phones and text us your e-mail address." We did that on tour, which was more of a sure-fire way...

Re: Ludwig Super Classic from 1964

I own a Hollywood (12/13/16/22) and a Downbeat (12/14/20). Ludwigs from the 60s/early 70s are THE best drum sound! Congrats on your kit, and welcome to the forum!

If you want to further expand on this basic concept, check out Akira Jimbo's "Wasabi" video. He starts with this paradiddle-diddle groove, inspired by Steve Gadd, and spends the whole video...

Re: Snares vs cymbals

Snares vs cymbals? Both.

I used to buy and sell a bunch of snares, looking for usable and unique sounds. I have now settled on 15 snares that cover just about anything I could want from a...

Re: Drum micing for newbies

I would start with 2 small diaphragm condenser microphones about 5 feet in front of the kit, spaced apart about 7 feet or so. Try that. If you find that it doesn't sound how you like, move them...

Re: Tips on Selling a Drumset?

Figure out what your kit sells for new and put it on craigslist for 50% of that. Expect to be talked down to about 35% of your original "new" price. Easy peasy. If you want to sell it for more...
