You have lots of options. You can check out shell packs from major companies or contact a custom builder. There are a whole slew of builders to choose from. If you want to go with a custom builder...

You can get surprisingly good kits for well under $1000, it just depends what you want. I had a gretsch catalina maple with an amber finish that I really loved. It sounded great...

I changed my mind I am going to get a 14" shell instead of a 13". I think I will probably go with a 14X5.5 shell.

I am thinking about building a new snare, before I head off to school. It is going to be a 13" shell but I am not sure about the depth. I am thinking anywhere from 5 to 6

GC sucks ...most of the guys don't even know what they are talking about there. I had a guy try are tell me an imperalstar was made out of the same maple that the starclassics are

The prices you are looking at are for the shells. You can get one assembled for well under $400.

There is not really anything special about the SJC, Shine drums out there. They are all keller...

it is an old marching tom. those old ludwigs had a mounting bracket that went in between the hoop and the head of the tension rod. I can try and get you pictures later if you want...

It is an old marching or tenor drum...I would saw it is worth about $70 maybe more if you are lucky. Ebay is flooded with them, I have one in red sparkle, and I am going to convert it to a floor tome...

I am not a fan of that strainer, and you can probably get a VC shelled snare for cheaper than that. I haven't heard of that brand so I would stay away from it.

I have a few vintage 14X8 snares that I use a lot surprisingly

a 14X6 gretsch catalina maple

14X5 acrolite
14X5 super sensitive
14X4.75 10 ply maple (the first snare I built)
13X3 maple...

those of some of the driest snares you will ever hear, and i need one...I want one but not a pearl black swamp makes the best snare...
