Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

At the risk of regurgitating what Anthony and some others have already said, it's everyone's job to make the time feel happen.

In many cases, the group I play with often starts a song without me...

Re: Child wants a career in music

Tough one... Depends on what the end goal is and what they want to do with it. I'm totally not in favor of it for many personal reasons.

That being said, going to school for anything these days...

Re: Gretsch Renown Maple vs PDP Concept Maple

I recently acquired a Gretsch Renown Groove kit. It's almost criminal how good these drums sound and feel compared to price paid.

Consider them a pro-level kit at an intermediate price. For...

Few ways...

Watch the entire Ken Burns Jazz Series. Many people were omitted from the series but some of the most important people were not. This is a great way to learn the history and some of...

Re: Preparing for 1st semester in jazz studies

Congratulations on your acceptance into a great school with amazing talent.

Since I live in town, I've spent several years of my life studying in the ESM Community Music School - private lessons,...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

Just caught this Anthony... Thanks man...

You ain't kidding about Sanchez's Migration Band. He's the now and a big part (in my view) of the future hope of where all this will go.

Not the same...

Re: Looking for new drums - vintage sound

C&C is a great choice.

I throw caution to referring to heavily on the definition of "vintage" though. Depends what you are using as your point of reference. Could be Slingerland, Rogers, Ludwig,...

Re: Forum psychology

I'm not leaving in a huff either. Frankly, everyone else has an absolute right to do exactly what it is they are doing. It's a public forum, not a forum owned or moderated by me.

It has zero to...

Re: Forum psychology

You're post accurately reflects my view as well.

I declared last week I'm taking a break from this place and most likely soon it will be the other great drum forum I'm on.

I posted something on...

Re: Please help determining value of these Recording Customs.

For reference, and your local market may be entirely different. I sold my 1980's RC's (10,12,14,16,& 22) about a year ago for $1500.00. I listed them at $1800. and after 3 months, there was no...

Re: If you were just starting to learn how to play today..

In my opinion (and only my opinion) there's no substitute for hooking up with and developing a relationship with a qualified teacher. I don't care what your "end goal" is or what genre you are...

Re: Considering buying a Gretsch New Classic Bop kit

If you can afford it, they are magnificent drums. It's a professional level set and are great to play. I have a bop kit in these along with a bop kit in USA Customs and Brooklyn's. The New...

Re: Most egotistical genre ;)

So true, especially when the music itself is built on improvisation. Still trying to figure out how to respond. Perhaps tomorrow.....

Re: Any pre gig routine?

My routine involves cursing and swearing that I need to move this stuff and then drag it all back home again when I'm done. Then talking to myself promising I'll never take another gig again....

There have been so many, not know where to start.

Yes, much of it was Baby Dodds. Also within that span are Paul Barbarian, Tubby Hall, Kaiser Marshall & Zutty Singleton.
