Re: Some cool Modern Drummers...

I didn't, but that came from Todd Trent, who handled the drums used at the photo shoot. I've also got a pic of Todd with Ringo at the shoot as proof, although it's really Todd's provenance, not mine....

Re: Some cool Modern Drummers...

I have a handful of issues, this one definitely the coolest:

Re: I Want to Gig!

Yep, having your own band guarantees that you'll get to play, at least in a regular rehearsal situation to start. There are probably a lot of other players in the same situation, just looking to play...

Re: Tell me if this is a stupid idea

Agreed on that, and the same reason the Lento glove didn't work for me.

Also, when your stick is 'married' to your hand (no pun intended) it hampers your ability to 1) grab a drink, 2) make...

Re: Moody Blues’s Graeme Edge: A Responsibility to Play the Hits

There are a few artists/bands that are the primary attraction, and any 'hits' they might have are secondary. People didn't go to a Zappa concert because they necessarily liked the music, they went to...

Re: Help me to identify the age of this Ludwig LM400!

If that's the original badge, it places that drum right around 1984.

Re: Moody Blues’s Graeme Edge: A Responsibility to Play the Hits

It's not really a mystery, just ask any artist with a sizeable catalog and more album cuts than hits.

The good news today is, by simply observing social media, artists can assess what their fans...

Last time I saw the show, he was using the Ludwig Signet kit.

Re: 30 songs in 6 days.

30 in 6 days is fairly leisurely. I had to learn 36 songs in 2 days, and I was working from cassette tapes!

Simple charts and notes are your friends. In theory, you really don't even need to...

Re: So and so is a good drummer, but...

Exactly. And the only opinion that really matters is that of the person who might hire you.

Drummers don't generally hire me, so I don't worry about their criticisms. Actually, I don't think I've...

Re: Strange gigs.....

I've got a lunch-time gig at a local convalescent home tomorrow. I get paid, I get lunch, it's a short gig, it's guys I love playing with, and it's only 1 mi from the house.

Hmmm, that doesn't...

Re: So and so is a good drummer, but...

Perhaps a non-drummer's comments carry more weight, as their observations are from a perspective of someone who would hire a drummer. Their observations matter more in terms of what a drummer should...

Re: So and so is a good drummer, but...

Somebody can be an incredible drummer... but not be a good musician. If Vinnie didn't know when to play 2&4, he'd be a poor musician.

Comments regarding volume, tempo, overplaying (or...

Re: Biggest problem with a sub, or new band member?

I posed the question initially more from a drummer's standpoint, where I believe that arrangement flubs are more obvious, and therefore a bigger problem, than the drum part itself. That is, playing...

Biggest problem with a sub, or new band member?

When there are performance problems with a player new to a band's set - whether it's you or someone else in the band - which issue is the bigger problem?

a) Not knowing the arrangements.

b) Not...

Re: Stripping - drums & fills.

I normally don't modify a set-up once I have it where it serves the band/gig best. I'm already a minimalist, and have no insecurities about taking only 3 or 2 drums on a gig if that's all it...

In the first post, Dave Major said this about three other drum teachers:

"None of them had done any research or had any prior knowledge of the other guys on YouTube and the net. None of them knew...

Re: Can a band recording be quantized?

It occurs to me that some players have problems with a click because of the specific click used. In other words, the 1/4 note tick-tock of a metronome at say 106bpm, may be tough to follow. but, a...

Re: Can a band recording be quantized?

You can quantize a complete mix successfully, if the tempos don't vary too much, especially from start to finish. But it will require a lot of patience, and a high enough res recording so that you...

Re: Professional responsibility

Nobody has to know everything, but they should strive to know the things that touch on what they do, or may even be detrimental to their livelihood. For a teacher today - young or old - to not know...

Re: Professional responsibility

I don't think it's a question of the teachers needing to know in order to teach, it's a question of them knowing what's going on in the drumming world and what their students may be exposed to.

Re: Professional responsibility

Maybe those teachers should spend some time in forums like this, where information is shared to the nth degree. At almost 58, and a long way from taking lessons, there's no reason I would need to...
