Re: A month and no drums

Aren't your ears refreshed, though? I'd imagine a month off would re-sensitise you.

Re: Does anyone actually like big finales?

Excellent drawn out end, Andy, and the crowd were right into it. At that point in the night it's an unstructured energy exchange between band and audience - the experts might say it's expressionist...

Re: Ginger Baker Turns 75: The Strange Life of Rock's Wildest Drummer

I thought the same thing when I read that. I guess the last of the old wild men still standing.

Too funny! He and Keith Richards are a mystery. My guess is it's their passion for playing that...

Re: Does anyone actually like big finales?

I like the chance to indulge in hammery :) Sometimes at the end of a couple of our rockier numbers I go crazy and give band and audience something to laugh at. People love the whole "Animal Drummer"...

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

Agree Bob.

At the same time, big kits don't have to be configured to encourage drummers to go boogidy boogidy down the drums. Speaking of Bill Bruford, he liked to set up his toms in more melodic...

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

From Ringo to Bozzio, from monster kits to buckets in the street - we need them all. The more diversity the better.

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

It does look good, Jim. Combines the advantages of wing nuts and, um, wingless, though it probably costs a few bob: http://www.gibraltarhardware.com/?fa=turningpoint

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

Porter, I understood the bit about gluing the felt on :)

At the moment I'm using gaffa tape to "secure" the washer, felt and sleeve. It's not very secure.

Re: Tell me if this is a stupid idea

My first thought with rubber bands was loss of circulation to the fingers. Maybe not.

DED, don't know how GB used those gloves - they looked too slippery for my liking.

I find a lot of it...

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

I take it the cymbal will ring more due to reduced dampening area underneath. I'm plenty noisy enough in a low volume 5-piece setup so that's not ideal.

There's been a few suggestions so far to...

Re: Insulting a member on the bandstand

Don't we all. Pity you didn't have a recording.

Some musical relationships, like any relationships, don't work out. Not everyone will like you, nor you them. You should feel better about all of...

Re: Insulting a member on the bandstand

Martin, just wondering if you could have been affected by adrenaline when you perceived the bass to be dragging. When I'm hyped up there are times when everything seems like it's dragging.

Love the prices ... 25-100 for the drumsticks but 1 for a night out with him :)

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

haha - that sounds familiar :)

First a four piece second hand set
then a five piece second hand set
then I put them together to make a large Frankenstein
then I went back to five piece, which...

Re: Open handed technique

Thanks Jakob for the informative post. Given how bad my LH is I'd probably benefit from the embarrassment of trying to play open handed as an exercise :)

Apart from cost, weight and setup, remote...

Here's my favourite track from Michal Urbaniak's fusion album, Body English ... Steve Jordan on drums playing brilliantly as usual and making the odd times feel intuitive:...

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

Might give that a try. I've only needed them to hold everything together and always good to minimise fiddly aspects of setup and tear down if possible.

Re: Strange woman found lurking in the workshop ;)

Thanks A&M. I was just thinking that when something sounds bad conventionally, sometimes it can make a useful novelty sound.

So ... Larry, James and Wumpus. Watso's crashing out on everyone's...

Re: Strange woman found lurking in the workshop ;)

Andy and Madge, as a matter of curiosity, how does that bow in the edge reflect in the sound. Is there a nasty ring that you can't tune out? Does the drum sound flat and toneless? Stuff like that ......

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

Do you mean the little ones on the clutch or the big one at the bottom?

Same here. I have a stand where I lost the wingnut and now gaffa tape is holding the stuff together. It's nice not...

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

I have always used wing nuts. They keep the felts on while in transit and if I didn't screw them back down again they'd soon be lost.

To the nutless ones (so to speak) ... how do you keep your...

Re: Insulting a member on the bandstand

I agree with the bassist in the OP that it's a buzzkill to be pushed into a technical headspace when you're on the journey. Whatever, sometimes it happens. Shouldn't be a big deal but some people are...
