Re: Confusion on rolls - open or closed?

As JohnW points out, the exception to what "closed" means in the context of a roll is in the breakdown. And I agree, open-closed-open is the hardest variety; that's what separates the grown-ups from...

Re: Let's talk about THIS Vinnie video

I don't find it particularly difficult to follow the stream of ideas. There is a definite pulse through it all and he's taking it to crazy places, but there's a thread running through it.

Now,...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

My musician and teacher friends have been discussing that a lot.

Here's my take: Greatness comes from within. Just like Fletcher thinks a student destined to become a great won't be discouraged...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

There was a thread about it that I posted to last week after seeing it. http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1305471#post1305471

I loved the movie.

Re: 8Mile's Gretsch itch

I'm reviving this thread. Planning a pilgrimage to Steve Maxwell's in NYC in the next few months. Finish choices are still plaguing me. There is nothing more ridiculous than asking advice about...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I've never heard of this. What is an auto-rip? The sound of the CD from Amazon isn't going to be confused with a studio date or anything, but it's not bad enough to ruin the music.

Re: Just This Moment I Have Purchased A Black Beauty

Bruce, I usually use the BB (which is a 6.5") when playing music with a backbeat. I've had coated Emperors on it and I prefer Ambassadors for small-group acoustic music, so I usually just bring the...

Re: Really, was this planned...?

Exactly. If you approach this like a musician using a piece of gear, these prices are all outrageous. When you think like a collector, it's not hard to understand.

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I bought this set the day it came out, but I have been re-investigating the DVD recently. This is my favorite group and there is precious little video footage of them playing live together, so this...

Re: Just This Moment I Have Purchased A Black Beauty

I love mine. The sound it makes is something I wish I could eat somehow.

Re: Beyond - dynamics - spaces

Yeah! This is my favorite thing I've heard from Hiromi. Simon just operates on the highest musical plane. This whole band is just crazy-ridiculous-virtuoso-amazing.

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

As many others have posted (including the link to a transcription), it's absolutely a rip-off of the Little Richard intro. Everyone (myself included until I looked it up a few years ago) seems to...

Re: Lovers of metal drumming ...

I really, really dig this. Great playing. I have been dabbling in some of this playing myself, but I have limited opportunities to play or practice it so I don't get to do it very often.

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

I know you are content to defer to this guy in every way imaginable, but I could never do it. Maybe I'm blessed to play with a lot of talented musicians, but unless I'm gigging with Wayne Shorter or...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

There are a couple songs that this happens to me with. Take It Easy by Eagles is one of them, but I'm not the only one who has trouble with that. I have to hear a count-in to hear it correctly in my...

Re: Michel Camilo on drummers ....

Yes, yes, yes. Love his remarks about expectations from a drummer being an equal partner in the music. There's talk on this forum about the drummer just taking a backseat and staying out of the way...

Re: Tension

I enjoy being a contrarian, so I tried really hard to think of how to argue that tension is good. But I failed. I just can't do it! So I'll have to agree (sigh).

On a more serious note, I do...

Beautiful. It's almost going to be a shame when you cover them in gold satin flame.

Re: Matt Johnson reflects on Jeff Buckleys "Grace" ... great video

Great stuff. So much great music came from the 90s. I was a teen in the 80s and I really didn't like much of the new wave or hair metal back then (I like some of it now), but the 90s were a breath of...

Re: Guitarist comment on drummers

MikeM, thanks for saving me a lot of typing.

Agreed on all counts. Drummers tend to have an inferiority complex. There are many musical styles but we tend to talk as if there's only one role for...

Re: Thoughts On Phil Collins??

Outrageously talented, in everything he does as a musician.

But only modestly influenced me, I suppose.

Re: Guitarist comment on drummers

It was probably just a put-on. Sounds like a funny guy just having fun with you.
