Re: Straying out of my comfort zone

Go on at 3Am? What is it, Woodstock?? Don't forget moongel.
No really, when I hear them in drum shops, some e-kits don't sound too bad, but they look so lame on stage. Just nothing aesthetically...

Re: I've got the "looper" blues

Same here. Not all guitarists 'hit the button' at the right moment... so the looper can at times eventually play out of sync with the band...which of course the looper doesn't give a damn about.

Re: How do I get this weird sound? Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer"

Yes a sample would sound great. As its a live show, if you don't want to do that I would think a loud trashy china would work. If you don't have on of those, than a cymbal stack could do.

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

ahhhhh.... the most poignant piece on this thread. :)

I'm no fan of electronic music either but somebody's doing it and power to them, as an art form or an income.

Re: Musically, what are you involved with at the present?

Decided to stay with the blues trio, loving it. So that's 2 bands. Hope I can time-manage.

Re: Conflicted on whether to join a band.

I say go with people who will make you 'play up' and bring your best out. Band#2 appears the choice. Your text is gushing about that one, while Band#1 sounds tentative and not very satisfactory for...

Re: 9X13 floor tom? Sensible?

I'd say wait for the right 14 floor tom. Its up to you but nice to have a good deeper note down there on the floor. A 13 just isn't it, and not much separation from the 12 from pitchwise.

Re: Old school rock bass drum setup.

My bass drum always has a felt strip. Wouldn't leave home without it.

Re: Buddy Rich

Buddy Rich is a great drummer, probably the best ever. Superb to watch and listen to.
I would not have wanted to work for Buddy. Even if I played sax in his big band, and he didn't bawl me out, I...

Re: Bass drum and double hitting

Do you bury the beater or let it rebound? Ported or unported head? This is more common unported.
Letting the beater come off avoids double-hits. So its technique but also higher spring tension...

Re: Musically, what are you involved with at the present?

It is not metal with acoustic guitars and birkenstocks.
It is metal... but they all dress like trolls.....literally

Re: Are our ears tuned to tradition?

When a youngster my dad came home with a family stereo, and an album of classics. So the first percussion I ever keyed into was the Anvil (and traingle) played in Verdi's Anvil chorus - always...

Re: How do you feel about buying used records?

Bob Lefsetz and others write about this all the time. The younger generation does not need to physically own, like the past generations. They will care less about owning houses, cars, software...

'Taste' drives the world, of commerce at least.
Yes nothing like and Amb, old tried and true.

Re: Applications for 13" tom

The real deal is 13-16-22. Behold the 13, embrace it. Learn its power and place, lol

Keep the 13 and use the 12 for something else, like make a bass drum sub mic, or give it to a kid who is...

Re: played (maybe joined) in blues band

There are many shuffles, an entire lexicon depending on who you speak to. I'm no expert. Many experts on here so hope Larry and others weigh in.

For years I struggled with the shuffle but got...

Re: played (maybe joined) in blues band

No apology needed, its an obvious question.
Well, dunno, maybe just try to stay in both bands. The classic rock band needs to rehearse way more, tighten up, but I seem to be the only one who sees it...

Re: played (maybe joined) in blues band
