Need Help With Buying a Djembe

Hey all,

So, call me ignorant but I'd never actually seen or heard anyone playing a djembe until a few days ago, and I've decided that I really want to get one and learn how to play it. The...

Re: Sell the second set or keep it?

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but having a second kit may come in handy if you decide to teach, so you can have two kits set up and so you don't have to keep trading off with your...

Re: Using Finale to create drum tabs - question...

It took me forever to figure it out, too.

You have to use flats and/or sharps :) Like for a snare note, I believe the second line from the top makes a rim click if it's a regular note, but if you...

Re: GC Drum off

It's obviously going to depend on the area, enough that we can't tell you how tough your competition will be.

5 years of playing? Give it a shot! You don't have anything to lose.

Re: Best Moeller Tech. Vid?

Derrick Pope described it pretty well in his video (which is available on this site) and a lot of people found that it worked for them.

Re: What annoys you on peoples drum sets?

I may be way off on this, but I thought someone had come out with clear duct tape or gorilla tape or something similar to that.

Re: Is it ok if I don't the hand cross thing?

Just have your set exactly like it is now, but use the left hand on the hats. Your right foot can still play bass and the left can still use the hats. It's pretty simple.

...Unless I'm...

Re: What annoys you on peoples drum sets?

This is an interesting conversation, but I'm not sure it's appropriate for this thread. Maybe we should start another one?

But, to answer your question, we use live music because it feels more...

Re: The ''Right'' Way To Set Up Your Kit

If anything, it makes a good point about the matter: There is no true right way, so there can't be too much of a wrong way.

Re: What annoys you on peoples drum sets?

You are certainly entitled to that opinion, I just don't agree with it :)

I just think drumming isn't about looking cool, it's about how you sound. It probably comes from my background--I play in...

Re: Is it ok if I don't the hand cross thing?

The reason to put the ride on the left is that if you're already playing clicks on the hi-hat, it's easier to use the same hand for the ride--it's hard to switch hands for that. Kind of like how...

Re: What annoys you on peoples drum sets?

The problems that people have when they set up their kits seems to come from two main places: their lack of knowledge, and their desire to look cool.

The first is a simple one, and I know I had...

Re: The ''Right'' Way To Set Up Your Kit

Haha, I was wondering if someone would follow up on that. Cool.

I'm going to save most of them for other people, but I will say that the most important thing would be to do what's comfortable for...

Re: Is it ok if I don't the hand cross thing?

Yeah, open-hand isn't any worse than crossed.

When I first started, I played open, until one of my drummer friends told me I was doing it wrong, and to play crossed. Now I wish I had ignored him.

Re: What annoys you on peoples drum sets?

So it seems like everyone here has ideas on what they consider to be a "good" setup; after all, in order to know what is bad, you have to know what's good, too.

So why not make a thread for people...

How do I take my drumming to the next level?

So, I've been playing for about a year and a half, and I'd like to think that I'm a pretty good drummer. I know the basic beats like the back of my hand, and I can throw in simple 1 or 2 bar fills as...

Re: The Drumroll

It was nice of you to post that, and I'm sure you were just trying to help, but I think most of us here probably know how to do that.

Appreciate you sharing your knowledge, though.

Also, wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for all of your...

Re: argh damn toms, please help

Silly question...are you sure it isn't the snare buzzing? Does it stop if you turn the snare off? That's a very, very common problem, and has to do with how the drums are tuned.

Re: Desert Island drumset technique?

Open handed playing is an almost 100% guarantee. Anyone who doesn't know drums (myself included) will naturally want to start out open-handed. If no one tells them otherwise, I'm sure they'd stick...

Re: Self discipline?

I personally structure my practice not so much by time, but what I want to accomplish. When I sit down to practice, I'll play some random stuff for a few minutes to warm up, and then think about what...
