Re: horrible time signatures (and how to cope)

I LOVE stuff like this. My band has passages in 15/16, 13/16, etc. Its all about breaking the measure down into smaller groups that match the phrasing of the other instruments and then developing...

Re: HELP!! The "are you ready" syndrome!

We always have some kind of noise between songs (singer talking, feedback, delay pedal, etc) to keep up the intensity and not bore people. There's nothing worse than having the entire venue silent...

Re: Reading the audience during a performance, whats your views??

We change our set on the fly. We have about 10 originals and usually only time to play 6 or 7 of them (some songs are pushing the 6 minute mark) so sometimes we'll edit the set to suit the audience....

Re: Band programs...are you satisfied with?

1.) I liked some of the music depending on the percussion parts. I played drumset on arrangements of "Classical Gas" and "MacArthur Park," and had lots of cool 4-mallet parts and hand percussion as...

Re: The gigging scene in your area

Dallas is nice. Lots of places to play, but most booking agents and venues treat young bands like they should be honored to even receive a slot. This usually leads to extremely poor compensation. ...

Re: Need help convincing parents about bass pedals.

I think your success on the double pedal is about 80-90 percent hard practice and technique. Also, from my experience you should base your pedal purchase on personal preference and personal...

Re: I need wise advice that only a percussionist can offer...

I think another piece that was less repetitive would demonstrate a wider range of skills.

But regardless, that song is SICK. :)

Re: my paradiddles do not sound like singles. help.

Are the sticks you're using worn or broken? When sticks get chipped or crack it can change the sound when you hit the drum, which may be causing the inconsistency that you're experiencing. Also,...

Re: And the Drums Oscar goes to....

I'd have to thank my parents for their initial support morally and financially, and also for convincing me to give drumline a chance in 9th grade.

Re: 20" bass in rock applications

Blake Richardson of Between the Buried & Me uses two 20" kicks, no triggers.

It seems to me that 20" kicks offer a wider range of sounds and more setup flexibility. So why is it that when I walk...

Re: What would you change about a drum brand?

I would like to see more packaged kits with 20" bass drums.

Also, Yamaha's slight variation of the Pearl rack system doesn't warrant doubling the price.

Re: Opinions on open handness

I play open handed about 25 percent of the time, and I am left-handed as well. There are such some situations where it makes more sense. Steve Smith said in a clinic that any good technique looks...

Re: How do you deal with a bad gig?

I've had one bad show where I kept missing transitions and our bass player botched a few exposed moments, but compliments from the crowd and from our friends assured us that no one noticed any of the...

Re: JOJO MAYER: NEW Hot Video...

Great footage!

Worked fine on Vista with Quicktime. I had a progress bar as well.

Is he using that new Sabian Chopper thing? Its slightly to the left of his ride if you're sitting on the...

Re: Joey Jordison

I agree completely. I myself used to find Brad Wilk (Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine) boring and unoriginal, until I realized how much is playing complimented the other musicians.

When...

Re: Steve Smith

History of the U.S. Beat is the best instructional DVD I've ever seen, and I didn't even see half of it . . . but don't worry I'm ordering it soon.

It's a shame that the Travis Barker thread is...

Re: Vinnie Colaiuta Lick!

Boy is that a sick tune if I've ever heard one!

That groove is crazy, lots of quarter note triplets and I think hemiola is the term? (for what we does when it's just the kick)

Correct me if I'm...

Re: The Blast Beat

Could you explain to me how that isn't a blast beat? The only diference is it's slightly slower and in 3/4.

RC|x-x-x-|
SD|-x-x-x|
BD|x-x-x-| . . . so on and so forth

Re: The Blast Beat

Before you judge what I'm about to say, keep in mind that I'm a metal fan as well.

In some cases, the blast beat fits with the music very well and is a very appropriate groove to play in that...

Re: Vinnie Paul

I read somewhere that he tapes silver dollars to his bass drum head instead of using like dots like normal, but I could be wrong . . .

I thought that was kind of weird, but it does explain why his...
