Genesis: Abacab
Rush: Moving Pictures
Living Colour: Vivid

There are of course many more, but these stick out as I was into them at such a young & impressionable age. Especially the Genesis...

Re: Recording advice/tips.

I would ask to get paid by song. If you (& they) nail it like studio vets you'll be in & out in 20 minutes after X amount of set-up/dial it in time. BUT, it sounds like everybody is probably less...

Re: I've had tendonitis in my wrists for the last year and half. I just joined a band. Advice?

It's just a technique issue. if you change your approach(es) to one (or those) which are more agreeable with your body, then you can go ballistic drumming 8 hours a day for life. I've had many...

Re: Playing 15 years, terrible stick control

Believe it or not, that's how I approach every student who comes to me, and they come to me ready to do just that. Pretty much every problem drummers have comes right down to some fundamental issue....

Re: Different grip on each hand

Having two different versions of matched grips won't be harmful or cause injury, but you will hit limitations for sure. Ultimately you'll want both hands to be be able to play all different positions...

Re: leaving the kick beater on the bass head?

I think we're all more on the same page than it seems. My post was basically defending burying the beater as a viable and good thing, not a lesser technique.

Both are good and I play both ways...

Re: leaving the kick beater on the bass head?

There's a time and place for each, burying and letting it come off the head. Among other things it depends on the drum--pillow or no pillow, port or no port. (A pillow and port make burying easy with...

Re: Playing with exaggerated dynamics.

I got an odd compliment once. A buddy said, "I can always tell when it's you playing because of the dynamics in the fills." I never really thought about it, but coming from an orchestral/rudimental...

Re: Confusion on rolls - open or closed?

Buzz rolls are usually 3 notes per hand. When I break down a triple stroke roll it graduates right into a buzz when reefed with no changes. When slowing down with a smooth transition it becomes...

Re: Confusion on rolls - open or closed?

Oh, and I strongly dislike the descriptor "open-closed-open" for slow to fast to slow rudimental breakdowns. Some people misunderstand and in the middle of their roll suddenly switch to a buzz roll....

Re: Confusion on rolls - open or closed?

In an orchestral context they are all buzzed, rudimental or otherwise they are open double stroke rhythms.

The question of slashes through the note stem came up; here's the deal: A slash through...

Re: Simon Phillips talks 'bout open handed, dynamics, big sound and recording :)

Great videos, thanks for sharing!

I've always love his drum sounds and playing. What a champ.

Re: What's On Your Shopping List?

I've wanted an 8" deep brass Pearl free floating snare for years. I just need to find the perfect under-priced used one that I can clean up. Then the monster of rock can come out and kick into beast...

Re: problems with tremolos on xhylaphone

Tremelo's (or rolls) on xylo are all about fast single strokes coming purely from the wrist. Finger control is not applicable here since there's basically no rebound on a keyboard, which is why I'm...

Re: Band members with bad timing

Record a gig and sit down as a band and listen/try to enjoy the heavy dose of truth serum! And then each member should make the adjustments in their flawed 1st person perspective in order to create a...

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

For me it depends on the dynamic desired, the sound desired, the surface I'm playing on and the speed. That's a lot of variables!

That said, having all of your options open with some pretty dialed...

Re: Realistic Expectations

Find the joy in making music! And in small accomplishments. We weren't put on this earth to be the best necessarily, but maybe the best we can be. And there's always the question of who you're...

What is it you want to get faster at? 15 smart & targeted minutes a day can be quite effective.

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

I've read part way back on this, but here are my thoughts:

As the teacher, don't be afraid to play a decent bit during lessons. I used to feel that "I should devote every second to serving this...

I have a 6.5x14" steel Pearl Export snare from 1989 and a tuning key. I'll stick with that this time around.

I went through the whole Funky Primer book of rock/funk beats left handed/footed. I had no ambitions of ambidextarity, I just wanted to put miles on my left side. It did me good for sure, though the...

Re: Hand Pain

I watched your video and here's what I noticed:

Your wrist pretty much never makes it down to neutral relative to the forearm when playing wrist strokes. You're hitting the drum with the hand...

Re: The Speed Obsession

Virtuosity will pretty much always be effective at stirring emotions and imagination (unless it's entirely over people's heads). Speed is a obvious outlet to display virtuosity.

That said,...
