Re: Is *not* being told you played a great gig as good/better than being complimented?

The audience's reaction to the band is what matters. If they like the band, that's a compliment to how you played. Audience members don't know anything about what makes a good drummer. I've seen...

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

I feel it's my responsibility to keep good time because that's my contribution to making the music feel good. But if others in the band are relying on me to keep time? That's horrible. Just awful....

Re: A mixture of Bonzo, Cozy Powell & Tony Williams :)

I love the way she plays. Power, groove, chops... she's definitely a chip off the Tony block. She's equally comfortable backing up Lenny Kravitz, leading a fusion combo or swinging acoustic jazz.

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

Larry, I think this is the attitude a successful drummer needs to have.

I played a gig last weekend and a bunch of people from my office came by to check it out. I was subbing for another drummer...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

Of course! Welcome!

Fuchsia Swing Song is terrific. I think the first Sam Rivers date, at least as a leader. Tony is ridiculous. Another recording from 1964. When December rolls around, I'm going...

Re: 50 years ago today...

Wow, I really stink at this. I somehow missed this monster:

Re: Hiromi trio gig report. Simon Phillips, Anthony Jackson

Great review, Andy. I know what it feels like to be so emotionally moved by a musical performance. It's a great feeling and I feel sorry for those who can't get off on it the way cats like us do.

Congratulations, man! They are beautiful and they're what you want. There's nothing like getting exactly what you've been dreaming of. Enjoy!

Re: 50 years ago today...

Hey, so I was a little late with this one. Andrew Hill's Point Of Departure, one of my desert island discs, was released on March 21, 1964. Another historically great Blue Note and another date...

Re: Jazz: Following the form questions

I don't have much to add that hasn't been said already. I would just say that Mickey Mousing is considered corny when it's overdone. The same way constant quarter notes on the bass drum in jazz...

Re: Argument with Guitarist over time signature

If you take a blues shuffle in 4/4 and slow it down enough, eventually you're going to write it in 12/8. I don't see the point in the argument, just play the f***ing song.

Re: Jazz: Following the form questions

As with most things, I don't think there's a single correct answer to this. Whatever works for you is good. Here's what I do:

When I'm supporting another soloist, depending on the...

Re: Will anyone ever write another 'classic'

I think it's generational. The biggest difference between 40 years ago and now is the way music is consumed. In the 1960s and 1970s, music was everything. There was no YouTube, no social media, no...

Re: Band leaders

I have been the leader, I've been the hired gun, and I've been part of collaborations where there was no clearly-defined leader. Honestly, it doesn't matter much to me. As long as the music is good,...

Re: Joey Kramer joins Pearl Drum Company

So Kevin Packard leaves Ludwig for Pearl and now Ben Sesar, Joey Kramer and our own Bo Eder follow suit. Hmm... coincidence???

Re: Are 13" toms obsolete?

Johnnie Walker is probably my favorite affordable, blended scotch. But the Islay malts are sublime. Not for everyone, but certainly for me.

Re: Are 13" toms obsolete?

Add my voice to the chorus of 13/16/22 enthusiasts. For small group acoustic music like bebop, I play 12/14/18. Those combos work so well for me that I pretty much stick with them.

I would...

Re: You get what you pay for

It's about risk/reward, though.

Motor vehicles get plenty of criticism for safety, for their impact on depleting natural resources, and for contributing to social ills ranging from obesity to air...
