Re: Is live music dead?

Just providing another perspective. Most of us aren't in bands like the ones that support these industry figures. But still....

Re: To gap, or not to gap? Fulcrum stuff...

Hey! I meant always as in "for as long as I can remember," not "in every situation."

Eluding capture,

Re: Fantastic Peter Erskine video

My jaw is on the floor. Not often that happens when I watch a 10-minute interview of a drummer on the web. Thanks for sharing, Ants. I passed this along to my friends in music education.

Re: Is live music dead?

Agreed that clubs are about DJs. But I still can see live music any night of the week for a short drive. Most of what I'm hearing lately is that live music is experiencing a bit of a renaissance....

That's a beautiful white and gold drum set.

Unable to resist the viral reference,
8Mile!

P.S. Nicely done, Grea!

Re: Has anyone read the book "The Wrecking Crew"?

Larry,

The title is just Muscle Shoals. IT may be on Netflix

Re: Has anyone read the book "The Wrecking Crew"?

Also check out the Muscle Shoals movie. Maybe my favorite of the documentaries about classic recording studios.

Re: To gap, or not to gap? Fulcrum stuff...

I think it's a great video. I especially dig the way you avoid absolutes. I'm no authority on anything, but I've always felt that was the correct approach and having you validate that strengthens my...

Re: Going to jams and getting my ass musically kicked is a good thing.

It's happened to me many times and it's always a good learning experience. One particular sit-in with a jazz group at a local cafe when I was in my early-20s was what inspired me to start really...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

I've been saying this for five years. You mother*****rs need to listen to me more closely. I'm way ahead of the curve.

Re: Whiplash Oscar win - will it spur sudden interest in "jazz drumming"?

Of course it will. Drumline spurred interest in marching/drum corps, too.

Re: Over exuberance - a time & a place?

Definitely a time and place! Nicely done.

I was guilty of over-exuberance just last night at band practice. I was egged on a bit by the guitar player, but in hindsight, it was not the right time...

Re: OT: Clark Terry Dead, Age 94

One of the very greats of all-time. In his honor, here's a personal favorite performance of his. RIP, Clark Terry.

Re: drum fill friday

4/5. I missed the metal one, even though I've been listening lately to the band it was by!

What a cool feature. I will be back to check these out in future weeks.

Re: Rick Allen (Def Leppard)

Rick could have quit Def Leppard. If the band supported Lange's decision, that was probably his only option. Then he never gets to be part of one of the most successful rock bands of the era. He...

Re: Rick Allen (Def Leppard)

I'd love to hear the original drum tracks for some of these albums where the producer replaced the drummer. I'm trying to imagine how bad they would have to be to affect sales. I'm sure it's legit in...

Re: Tips on Ghost Notes.

Are you practicing your rudiments? They prepare your hands for ghost notes by pretty much covering the whole spectrum of taps and accents. You can build a drum set pattern with ghost notes just off...

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

The Heartache Tonight drum part was sampled (or at least copied) on the Haim track The Wire.

Re: S****y albums done by great bands..

Van Halen was my favorite band when I was younger during the Roth years. I didn't hate the Hagar version, but it changed completely. I think a lot of great bands come up with a unique sound because...

Re: Starting Back At The Basics Is Very Humbling

Yes. I'm humbled daily.

But about 5 years ago, I started re-vamping my hand and foot technique completely. I had gone through a period of years where I hadn't done much practicing and I became...

Re: Brand Loyalty

I don't feel any particular loyalty to a brand. But who cares if it's silly or not? Music and the arts aren't just about being logical. It's okay to fall in love with a brand, whether it makes sense...

Re: Are there fewer demands for a drummer now, than before?

I have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I think technology has allowed drum parts to be edited more easily and even mediocre drummers can create a drum part that can be made to work on a...

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

I think he's hugely relevant. I agree with your assessment about the way he played for the song. His drumming is absolutely void of ego. Probably had a lot to do with the fact he was writing and...

Re: So how's this for bitter?

If I'm playing music with a backbeat, I port my bass drum. I'm not so passionate about how my bass drum is captured that I'm going to argue with a sound guy/gal about that. They almost all seem to be...
