Re: Drum store being sued

I hit large cymbals more repeatedly, over several decades, and at distance much shorter than 6 feet! Can I sue the cymbal companies?

Sheesh... anything for a buck, eh?

Re: Electronic Drum Kit Survey

I've been using electronics and kits since 1984, but I can't do the survey without a Google account.

Try SurveyMonkey where registration isn't needed, and everyone can respond.

Re: Looking for new kit with vintage sound?

Except, a new bop kit isn't going to deliver the '70s rock sound of the Slingerlands. Madman is looking for 20" kick, 12 or 13" tom, and 16" floor.

FYI, the desired sizes may be tricky to find in...

Re: Beginner (Fun) songs?

Beatles, Stones, any one-hit-wonder, and the Elvis Costello catalogue through about 1982.

Re: Musicians Union?

In order to not appear to have a monopoly or otherwise make excessive demands, the union has turned a blind eye to venues that didn't want to be "union houses", and that's how they lost their grip....

Re: Musicians Union?

Although the AFM could have jumped in, they had no jurisdiction, and the effort would have been regarded - rightly so - as very self-serving. There probably haven't been union club dates since the...

Re: Tempos - Too Fast?

YES!

And... no.

Like real musicians, a drummer is subject to various things that affect one's perception of tempo: excitement, fatigue, anxiety, intoxication, frustration or anger.

There are...

Re: Tempos - Too Fast?

Workable tempos are crucial to a song (and band's) success. Most songs have a fairly narrow tempo range in which they sound and feel good. A few BPM one side or the other of that range may result in...

Re: Looking for new kit with vintage sound?

The drums do sound very vintage-y. I've got 18/12/14, and 22/13/16 Club Date kits, and they're my most vintage sounding new drums.

But with due respect to Jim and his very cool shop, that price is...

Re: Musicians Union?

Much of that comes from the lack of solidarity among its members. Let's be honest, if many players over the decades hadn't agreed to work for less, we wouldn't be getting the same pay now as in the...

Re: Looking for new kit with vintage sound?

Unless you buy used, you'll be fairly limited by your budget and need to buy an imported kit. I'm not sure what some of the Asian budget lines include, but Ludwig's Club Date series has roundover...

Re: Cajons for dummers? Scandalous?

I think they're cool in the appropriate venue and musical styles. Never had the urge or need to get one though. When I need quiet, portable drums, I bring a snare and brushes, and a throne. Like Bo,...

Re: Drum tab

Learning to read, yes. But learning to write is just as important. It includes learning to listen, whose benefits cannot be overstated.

Re: Drum tab

Tabs are a shortcut, and they'll get you part of the way there. But notation is a more expressive, versatile, widely-accepted method. I've also never seen a pro write (or read) tabs, not even with...

Re: Drum tab

I'd say that most drummers try to make a part "their own" and aren't necessarily interested in copying or even referencing the actual parts. So, less demand, less availability of such drum parts.

Re: Drum tab

This might be the right opportunity to learn to write tabs - or better yet, notation - and Get Off My Cloud is a simple enough way to start.

Listening to drum parts in order to write them will...

Re: Hollywood Drum Show 10/18

I was there (missed you Bo if you were, too.)

Good show, not too crowded but definitely noisy, with some great entertainment every other hour. Some of the exhibitors did okay sales-wise, some...

Re: George Way Drum Kits?

The drums are very sweet, although I hear them only when tuned on the high side. I'm pretty sure there's plenty of growl and oomph when tuned for rock!

Ronn had a couple of kits at the Hollywood...

Re: Hollywood Drum Show 10/18

I've attended most of the shows, including the very first one at the sound stage on Sunset. I'll be at this show as well, and am going in today to help with the Ludwig booth. Should be a great show!...

Re: Evans emad 2 muffler ring broke

I use EMADs on probably 20-25 of my kicks, and have only had the ring split once (on my tour kick, which gets the most handling and playing abuse.) Some people have reported the same problem, and I'm...

Re: Drummer Mike Johnston Pioneers Online Drum Teaching

I saw Mike do a clinic a few years ago at Sam Ash in Phoenix, and enjoyed it immensely. He conveyed concepts well, and can definitely play in order to demonstrate them!

He also gave away some nice...

Re: Using Left Foot Hi-Hat, Does It Help Improve Time?

Understood about internalizing the time, that's part of the interdependence I use by having the rest of my limbs play to my left heel. It makes no sound, and I'm not concerned with how it might look...

Re: Bee Gee's Night Fever hi-hat question

The hat is pretty straight, with the disco open on the choruses. There is a gentle hip-hoppy vibe, in the timing is as you described - 1 & 2 &(a) 3 & 4 &(a) - but I'd leave it to the guitar...

Re: Using Left Foot Hi-Hat, Does It Help Improve Time?

I use my left heel to help keep time, whether the hat is open or closed. I don't make a sound with my foot on the hat, I just bring my heel up & down in time. It then becomes my metronome, and I play...
