The other thread is closed, so I'll post this here: http://blog.gretsch.com/gretsch-news-from-namm-a-report-on-whats-changing-and-whats-not/2015/01/

Re: That Erskine kit at NAMM

Do you guys ever go to a club and see a drummer with yellow drums, though? I can't say it's something I ever come across. Also, if I buy the yellow in a four-piece bop set, that's not the same as the...

Re: That Erskine kit at NAMM

As I mentioned two posts up, I believe he had a yellow set before Tony. In fact, one of his yellow Gretsch sets is at Steve Maxwell's.

Re: That Erskine kit at NAMM

I'm struggling with the decision about yellow on my next set as well. I'm torn between paying homage to one of my heroes and doing something else that's completely me. I've heard that Elvin actually...

Re: NAMM 2015 - what do you expect to see?

Premier marketing blurb: "Great sound, and plies like a motherf****r."

Re: Tony Williams Hi hat on "Fred"

It's hard. No two ways about it. It's kind of weird playing the backbeat at the end of that three-note pattern for me. I guess I'm not the only one who finds it tough.

Re: It finally happened...the snareless gig

Hahaha. I can't stop laughing. But it's not funny when you realize you've done that.

What's the size of that Canopus bass drum? Is that 16"?

Re: The natural meter challenge!

Well I am gonna put up a clip as soon as I have my drums in front of me. Seems like a fun challenge!

Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

We can quibble over whether "hate" is the right word, but the complaints about DW smack of the attitudes some people have towards anyone or anything successful. If DW is acquired by Yamaha ten years...

Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

If anyone at DW is paying attention to social media (and I'm sure they are), the message about leaving Gretsch alone should be received loud and clear.

I don't get the DW hate, to be honest. Yes,...

Re: The natural meter challenge!

How are we tracking bpm drift, by the way? I have the LiveBPM app on my phone. Are you guys using something similar?

Re: The natural meter challenge!

I don't have access to my drums right now, but how about doing it with a practice pad? Would that pass the contest rules? If not, I'll have to wait a week or so before I can put something up.

Re: Billy Cobham's Stratus fill stickings?

That's the thing, the speed seems impossible. It sounds hard, but when you try it... it's even harder. His starting point is 16th note triplets, and then he adds the hertas to that. Ridiculous.

Re: Billy Cobham's Stratus fill stickings?

I was obsessed with those fills when I was younger. So much so, that I would slow down the record to try and decipher them. Years later, I downloaded some software to slow the playback down. It seems...

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

When I think about what it means to "master" a BPM, I'm thinking more in terms of playing really grooving, relaxed, creative things at that tempo very comfortably. I know that has nothing to do with...

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

I guess the thing for me is what's comfortable and what grooves for you. With a blast beat, your hands have to be moving at those speeds to make it work, so you really don't have a choice. But if I...

Re: The official, "Your services are no longer required" thread

I'm sorry to hear, man.

It's not about your musicianship. It's a corporate decision based on economics. You're an excellent musician. I know it's easier said than done, but it shouldn't damper...

Re: A couple of Elvin transcriptions (and a Brian Blade one why not?)

Very nice work, William. Transcribing Elvin is a bit**. I will have to take these to the shed when I'm in front of my set!

Still impressed! That's really, really fast to sustain 16th notes. Damn.

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

So do I. I think it's important we think about these things. When people say, "You're thinking too much," I cringe. It's easy to say that if you've already worked something out, but getting there...

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

Sorry to get off-topic a bit, but Bill, my head is exploding here. That's like the right-hand part of an 1120 bpm single-stroke roll.
