Re: Learning drums

What music do you enjoy most? I was motivated to pick up the instruments I play mostly by listening to my favorite music. That is a good starting point for most beginning musicians. Jeff is spot on,...

Re: using snare of different material than shellpack

I have never in my years of drumming used a matched snare. My usual culprit is a metal snare of some kind.

In response to the OP: there's so many variables at stake with your maple snare it could...

Re: The 2015 funky Guru snare competition starts now! Entry details :)

I can't wait to post my entry (forthcoming, btw) so I can finally treat myself to these other entries. I am purposely avoiding watching any of them to keep from stealing any ideas... I would like to...

Re: I've got a big one ------ &

I am wiping the drool off my chin, the keyboard, my lap, and off the floor. Gwuhhhh. That snare screams ROCK at me with all of its manly balls behind it. ROCCCCCKKKKKKKKK. It will rip off your arm...

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

I agree with the vast amount of folks on here. I attend blues jams for free. I play at church for free (I consider it a way of tithing). I play charity events for free.

Anything else, I would...

Re: Sloppy fills

I've been the sloppy fill guy before, and where I was most guilty is 16th notes on the snare. I would kind of slur my way through it without paying attention to precision very much. And eventually I...

Re: Using splash cymbals

Splashes are short, sharp stabs of sound. I use them in more delicate passages where I don't want a long sustained crash, but I need some minor punctuation. At one time I kept two or three splashes...

Re: Twisted Sister Drummer dies

There was a point in the early 80's where everyone heard this guy on the radio at least once a day. If that's not success (at least success as defined at the time) then what is?

I have to chuckle...

Re: Last piece of gear you forgot?

When using in-ear monitors, forgetting your earphones is kind of a big deal. Fortunately I was able to borrow a set of over-the-ear cans for soundcheck and my wife was able to bring my Shure in-ears...

Re: Did I order wrong snare wires?!

Yep, you will. The FFS wires don't work with standard snares because they extend past the edges. Good news, you should be able to return the item and use the refund to get what you need.

Re: Peart - would you hang out with him?

I think he would be a fascinating hang, but I also suspect that unless introduced by a mutual close friend, the likelihood of that hang is infinitesimal. I appreciate his contribution to the art but...

Re: How Does Your Band Set Up on Stage?

General rule of thumb is singers up front, guitarist near the front, drums in the back, and line of sight between the key players. Everything else is pretty much up to size of the stage/playing area...

Re: Kinda' ok with slowing down

Unless drumming pays all the bills, it's usually not realistic to put it as a first priority in one's life. My day job has forced me away from any real playing for the last eight months, and I even...

Re: RUSH retirement rumor

I would hope they retire while still in relatively good form. Geddy's voice can't take too much more... he sounds like he's straining to get it done the last couple of live albums, although both...

Re: How many bands have you been in at the same time?

In two and playing in church at the same time has been my limit, or in a band and doing a musical at the same time. If the bands are cool with it and boundaries are observed politely it can be just...

Re: The 2015 funky Guru snare competition starts now! Entry details :)

Re: Last Minute Gig Fees

I look at it as doing the due diligence to earn the money in the first place. Most of the songs I learn will go into a book or playlist somewhere and be available to dust back off if I ever need to...

Re: More Ludwig Signet porn

I *am* hoping to get both size kicks. I did not realize they *do* have an 8" a la carte.... hrmmm.

I'm not complaining, I just made the point that in some of the gigs I play, I need a less...
