Gretsch Renown - thinking about buying

Ok. This is an old old thread, but I did buy the Gretch Renown. She's a beaut - here's some drum porn.

I have some vintage and some new Gretsch kits. I like all of them. When it comes to my Purewood African Mahogany kit though....it has it's own thunderous voice...especially the bass drum which is 18x22. I do prefer the 14" deep bass drums though....just a size thing more than anything. I've only ever sat behind a few Maple Renown kits and ....IMHO...they are not as nice as my Purewoods. The Purewood Series used plys of finish quality and the drums were short runs. In my case there were only 60 kits made for worldwide distribution....so they are a bit of a rarity.

Personally I don't like the badge design on the Marquee or the new Renowns...even if they are 'round' badges. I think if they're going to use 'round' badges they should be like the round badges of the 30's - late 69 early 70. But I know Gretsch saves the Round Badge Series for Anniversary runs and maybe some very special drums. There was nothing wrong with the old Renown Badge....they look great.

If you get a chance to check out a second-hand Purewood I think you'll like.

And....what Bo said about Pearl drums is right on....they're fantastic drums.
