Derek Roddy (born August 28, 1972) is an American drummer and snake breeder, originally from South Carolina. His ability to record entire drum tracks in one or two takes earned him the nickname “One Take”. Derek is most known as an Extreme Metal drummer playing with many influential Extreme bands including Hate Eternal, Nile, Malevolent Creation, Divine Empire, Council of the Fallen (where he also played guitar), Today Is the Day, Traumedy, and Aurora Borealis.
In early 2007, Roddy started an instrumental band called Serpents Rise, which almost immediately grabbed the attention of drummers/musicians around the world. Serpents Rise is often referred to by fans as having an obscure sound for their bizarre guitar parts and incorperation of various percussion instruments, atmosphere and dynamics.
In 2010 Roddy was one out of seven drummers who was asked to auditioned to replace Mike Portnoy as the drummer for Dream Theater.
Since his departure from Hate Eternal in 2006, he has become a featured drum clinician for several companies, including Meinl Cymbals, Axis Percussion, and DW Drums. He’s performed at most every major drum event around the world including: The 2007 and 2010 AUDW (Australia Ultimate Drummers Weekend), the Singapore Drum Festival, multi apperances at the NAMM Show, 2007 and 2010 Meinl Drum Festival, 2007 and 2012 DrummerLive, PASIC, Moscow Drum Fest, South Africa Drum Fest and at the 2008 Modern Drummer Festival-a performance which has since been released in the DVD format by Hudson Music. Derek was the first Extreme Metal Drummer to author instructional material on extreme metal drumming. “The Evolution of Blast Beats” and was released by Hudson Music in 2006 and was the first time Blast Beats had been published in instructional notation. Since, he has also authored 2 other DVDs..”Blast Beats Evolved” (2009) and his latest “Playing With Your Drums” (2012) also released by Hudson Music.
Derek continues to perform clinics and masterclasses, recording and freelance work in addition to his newer musical projects.
