Groove Style: Funk Rock
Transcription + Tabs

Tony Williams

"Red Mask"

Transcription by Rich Lackowski

Before this song takes on its jazzy identity, Williams launches into a tasty funk/rock fusion groove immediatly following his spectacular triplet based tom fill that kicks off the track.
The groove masterfully blends solid backbeats and bouncy ghost notes on the snare with sloshy notes on the hi-hat and pulsating hits on the kick.

First, let's dissect the groove and play only the first half. Play sloshy eight notes on the hi-hat, ghosting the "&" of each beat, snare on 2 - "e" - "&" and 4 - "e" - "&" and kick on the "ah" of beats 2 and 4. Play this groove very slowly at first, and be sure to play at a steady tempo. Increase the speed only as you feel comfortable

Now, let's focus on the second half of the groove. Again, play sloshy eight notes on the hi-hat, but this time, play the snare on the "e" and the "ah" of beats 1 and 3, and on the "e" and the "&" of beats 2 and 4. Again, play the kick on the "ah" of beats 2 and 4. Practice very slowly at first, and focus on playing the groove evenly and steadily.

Next, put the two halves together, and play the entire groove pattern.

Finally, add some feel to the groove with some accented and ghosted snare hits.
With a little practice, you'll sound just like Tony Williams!!

This book rocks!, September 22, 2007 - Review by C. Page (Chicago, IL)
I LOVED this book! The author's enthusiasm is contageous, and he does an awesome job profiling various drummers of different styles who influenced musical history. The author not only explains the various styles and songs that made these drummers famous, he even shows you how to play the beats yourself. This book is a great gift for seasoned drummers and non-musical people who appreciate drumming. You won't be disappointed!
